Join us for Belgium’s Centennial International!

Anner

On August 27, 1905, Belgium played its first international against the Netherlands.

On Saturday, August 27, this year both countries will be celebrating the 100-year anniversary with a Centennial gala match for their national Over-40 teams. The match will be played from 1 pm at Antwerp CC’s ground at Rumst and will be followed by post-match celebrations (details to follow).

One hundred years ago at Beerschot, Belgium took on the Netherlands and lost. The Netherlands made 157 batting first. Belgium then made 23 in their first innings, followed by a better 47-4 in the second. From that year, the fixture became an annual event until interrupted by World War 1.

In the same year, 1905, the first Federation Belge de Cricket was formed by Count Jos d’Oultremont, who played at Brussels and also played a number of times for the Belgian national team over two decades. One major highlight of his career was the tournament involving Belgium, France, the MCC and the Netherlands which was held to mark the Brussels Exhibition of 1910.
