Big wins for Calpe and Grammarians
TJF
The week-end Wiggins Shield action saw substantial victories for Calpe CC and Grammarians CC against PGCC and UKCCC respectively. Highlights of the action were an undefeated 96 from Karan Aswani of Calpe, a four wicket haul for Dheeraj Punjabi of Grammarians, and a fine century opening stand by Mark Bacarese and Kabir Mirpuri of the same club.
New boys find the going tough.
Calpe CC won the toss on Saturday, opted to bat first and opened their innings with Akhil Viz and Ross Harkins. The latter was soon leathering the ball to all corners of the ground but his partner lacked similar aggression, scoring a mere five runs off the first 38 balls that he faced. It was therefore thanks to Harkins’ 48 off 43 balls that Calpe were able to come in for the fifteen overs drinks break with 72 runs on the board. As so often happens, the drinks break was worth a couple of wickets as both openers fell to Phil Langley in the sixteenth over, and this brought David Young and Karan Aswani to the crease. These two put on 52 for the third wicket before the former was run out for 24. Robbie Skinner then joined Aswani and they remained undefeated as a further 98 runs accrued, thanks in the main to an aggressive knock of 96 by Aswani, scored off just 59 balls. Calpe CC were thus able to come in for the mid-innings interval with the impressive total of 224/3 off their allotted thirty overs. For PGCC, Langley returned figures of 2/26.
PGCC started disastrously, losing both openers with only 12 runs on the board. Gautam Prabhu and Anupam Sinha then took the total along to 40 before Skinner struck twice in quick succession to account for both of them. There was some hope for PGCC as Michael Jacobson came to the crease and hit 50 runs off 47 balls, but he received little support from the other end and once he holed out to mid-wicket the game as over as a contest. In the end, PGCC were dismissed for 163 in 29.3 overs. Calpe CC went home with 18 points to PGCC’s two. For Calpe CC, Aswani completed a fine afternoon’s work with figures of 3/14, Akhil Viz took 3/10 off two overs, and Skinner 2/35.
Grammarians CC in command.
Grammarians CC were in complete control of affairs in the Sunday match against UKCCC. The latter won the toss, chose to bat first and lost their first three batsmen with 37 runs on the board. David Jacobs and Steve Cary then put on 47 runs for the fourth wicket but the introduction of Dheeraj Punjabi into the attack changed the complexion of the game completely. He demolished the middle order as UKCCC slumped to 122/9 in their allotted thirty overs, Punjabi returning figures of 4/27 and Nicky Gordon taking 2/18 off his six overs.
Mark Bacarese and Kabir Mirpuri opened for Grammarians and were never in serious trouble as they proceeded to put on 102 runs in the opening nineteen overs. When Bacarese was bowled by Neeraj Punjabi for 43, Mohammed Usman kept Mirpuri company as UKCCC’s total was overhauled without further loss in the 22nd. over, Mirpuri ending undefeated on 47. Grammarians CC took 18 points from the game; UKCCC went home empty handed.
