Cricket – Wiggins Shield
WEEK-END OF ONE-SIDED CONTESTS.
The week-end saw two very one-sided contests at the Europa Oval as UKCCC and GCC overwhelmed PGCC and Calpe CC respectively. GCC now move to second spot in the Wiggins Shield Table, just four points behind Grammarians whilst Calpe just manage to hold on to third spot ahead of UKCCC. PGCCC languish at the bottom.
All too easy for UKCCC.
UKCCC hardly had to break sweat on Saturday against new boys PGCC to achieve a comprehensive victory. Batting first, PGCC, without their best batsman, Michael Jacobson, and skipper Phil Langley, found the going hard from the outset and lost wickets at regular intervals. Only three of their batsmen managed to get into double figures as the side was bundled out for a paltry 83 runs in just 19.2 overs. The UKCCC bowlers had a field day, Steve Cary taking 2/6, Chris Watkins 3/9, Greg Harris 3/31, and twelve year old Josh Hatcher 2/13.
UKCCC made heavy weather of overhauling this modest total, taking 21.1 overs before achieving the inevitable victory. Harris completed a fine afternoon’s work with an undefeated 52. UKCCC thus took nineteen much needed points from the game whilst PGCCC went home empty handed.
GCC march on.
GCC won the toss on Sunday, chose to bat first and made a horrendous start to their innings, losing four wickets with only 44 runs on the board. As has happened so often in the past their skipper Christian Rocca then came to their rescue. He and Gary De’Ath added 63 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter holed out to Colin Skinner, after which Adrian Hewitt kept his captain company whilst a further 96 runs accrued. Hewitt was run out for 37 towards the end of the innings and Rocca just managed to add yet another century to his lengthy collection before the thirty overs were out. GCC’s final total was 216/6, Karan Aswani taking 2/30 for the fielding side.
Calpe CC rely very heavily these days on Aswani and David Young and when the former was brilliantly caught by Rudi Phillips off his own bowling for 18, Calpe were struggling. Ross Harkins (29) and David Young (38) made useful contributions, but once they had departed wickets tumbled cheaply. Vishal Kainth and Karan Sadhwani added 30 runs for the last wicket but the side was dismissed for 148 in 28 overs. For GCC, Phillips returned figures of 3/18, De’Ath 3/19 and Hewitt 3/33. GCC took nineteen points from the game to Calpe CC’s three bowling points.
Next Week.
The Wiggins Shield takes a back seat next Saturday as Gibraltar’s U19’s continue their preparations for their participation in the World Cup Qualifying Series in Scotland in July with a friendly match against a Rock XI. Match starts at 11.00am.
