Garrett steers Island to victory over MCC

Maurice Trace

A magnificent innings by Graeme Garrett drove the Island Select to victory over the MCC on Friday.

Chasing 121 for victory, the Manx team were in trouble at 18 for 4 after sixteen overs. Then Graeme joined opener Simon Watson and the pair rebuilt the innings.

They gradually overcame a fiery MCC attack and then began to hit out. Simon was dismissed for an excellent 29 when the total was on 90.  Ollie Webster gave support as Graeme guided the side home with only two overs left. He finished on 65 not out with a battling performance of the highest class.

The match had been delayed by rain and the MCC chose to bat first. They immediately encountered some top class bowling for an enthusiastic Island attack.

Chris McConnell and Scott Pearce opened and their combined 18 overs yielded only 14 runs. Chris returned the splendid figures of 1 for 4 off nine overs and Scott picked up 2 for 10.

Garreth Roome charged in to pick up three wickets and the visitors were reeling at 53 for 6 from thirty five overs.

Then Simon Plevin cracked a belligerent 49 not out and the tail wagged to add 73 from the last ten overs. MCC finished on 120 for 9 and must have thought the match was theirs when they had the Island Select at 18 for 4.

But Messrs Garrett and Watson had other ideas and their splendid play enabled the Manx to record their fifth win in a row against the MCC – in fact the MCC’s most recent victory was in the last century.

In their first match of the tour, MCC lost a close game to Fencibles.

After rain held up the start, the match was reduced to 35 overs per side. Fencibles batted first and were pinned back by the accurate attack of the visitors.

Mark Williams (31) and Pete Richards (21) were the pick of the batsmen as the home team finished on 85 for 7. Simon Bolton took 2 for 9 from seven overs and Richard Nichols returned 2 for 12.

In reply MCC made a solid start, but were then undone by the arrival of Ian Tayfield in the attack. The Castletown bowler had a magnificent spell of 5 for 23 from his seven overs.

The batsmen had major problems dealing with his off spin and found themselves 55 for 7 with only six overs left. Despite some aggressive play by the tail, Garreth Roome and Chris Stockdale polished off the tail to give Fencibles a great victory by just 11 runs.

Ramsey pulled off a fine victory against Cronkbourne in the Standard Bank League on Saturday. The Northerners were dismissed for 110 with Chris Stockdale taking 5 for 41 which included his first-ever hat trick. Chris McConnell cracked an aggressive 42 with four sixes.

In reply Cronkbourne reached 51 for 2 and were on their way to victory. Bronwell Williams was in great form, but then the Ramsey bowlers struck back. The Tromode side lost their last eight wickets for just 45 runs and Ramsey won the match by 14 runs. Bronwell scored an excellent 43, Chris McConnell returned 3 for 41 and Charlie Whipp claimed 3 for 20.

Leaders St Johns had a good win over Valkyres. The Southerners were bowled out for 95 with Geoff Thomas top scoring on 24. The Saints got the runs for the loss of 4 wickets – Ewald Killian led the way with 58 not out.

Crosby recorded a convincing ten wicket victory against Castletown. The Town were dismissed for 121 – Mike Baker hit 48, Gareth Morris made 32 and John Short took 3 for 21. Crosby got the runs without losing a wicket – Danny Kniveton scored 54 and Simon Watson 48.
