Cricket – Caleta Hotel League

BIG WINS FOR GRAMMARIANS AND CALPE

The Caleta Hotel League matches over the week-end produced substantial victories for Grammarians CC and Calpe CC over UKCCC and PGCC respectively.    Highlights included a massive total of 415/5 by the Calpe boys with Chris Phillips and Ross Harkins helping themselves to centuries.

Grammarians triumph over UKCCC.

UKCCC won the toss at the Victoria Stadium on Saturday and put Grammarians in to bat.   Mark Bacarese and Kabir Mirpuri put on 41 runs for the first wicket, before the former was run out in the twelfth over when nine short of his half century.   Mohammed Usman went cheaply after which Mirpuri and Kayne Peliza pushed the total along to 74, at which point three wickets fell for the addition of only 21 runs and at 95/5 Grammarians were struggling.   Vikram Khatwani (36) and Richard Buzaglo (45) then came to their rescue with a sixth wicket partnership of 57, and when both fell in quick succession, Raj Kochhar hit a quick fire 48 to take the total along to 219/8 at the end of the allotted fifty overs.   For UKCCC Roy Rodgers returned figures of 3/37.

UKCCC struggled from the start and at the 25 over stage were 71/5.    There was to be no tail wagging as the whole side was dismissed for a paltry 136 in 47.4 overs.    For Grammarians Neil Emerson was outstanding, returning figures of 2/9 off his ten overs whilst Kochhar and Bacarese each claimed two victims.    Grammarians took eighteen points from the game to UKCCC’s four.

 Run bonanza at Europa.

The match between Calpe CC and PGCC, played at Europa on Saturday, produced no less than 691 runs!    Calpe CC won the toss, opted to bat first, after which Steven Gonzalez and Chris Phillips proceeded to help themselves to plenty of runs.     Their opening stand had yielded 180 runs after twenty overs before Gonzalez was trapped leg before by Manish Grover when two runs short of his century.    PGCC tasted a second success 21 runs later as Grover struck again to account for Karan Aswani, but Phillips raced to his ton aided and abetted by Iain Latin in a third wicket stand of 62.   Phillips was eventually bowled for 123, but there was to be no respite for the PGCC bowlers as Ross Harkins hit an undefeated 103 in Calpe’s final total of 415/5.   Grover returned figures of 4/75.

Undaunted by the mammoth total facing them, PGCC made a good start to their innings, Manish Grover and Hetal Shah putting on 64 runs for the first wicket in the opening thirteen overs before Dylan Armstrong bowled Grover when the batsman was just one run short of his half century, but Shah did reach his before being bowled by Robbie Skinner.   Gautam Prabhu (41) and Arun Kokku (45) made useful contributions in the middle order enabling PGCC to reach a total of 276/7 at the end of their fifty overs.   Calpe CC thus went home with twenty points whilst PGCCC picked up seven.
