The Island Junior squad to play in the European Championships in Italy has been announced. It is Matthew Entwisle, Seb Hopkins, Louis Thornton (Valkyres) ; Kane Dooley, Max Stokoe, Kris Mann, Clark Hind, Luke Lacey (Cronkbourne) ; Oliver Swales, Andrew Turner (Crosby) ; Bradley Marshall (Castletown),Thomas Howard (Ramsey) and Michael Cawte (Finch Hill). Mark Entwisle will be the manager and the senior coach is David Hopkins. The tournament takes place between August 7th and 13th. The Manx are in Group B together with Greece, Germany and Italy. They play Greece on Monday August 8th at Capannelle, Germany the next day on the Gallicano ground where they also meet Italy on the Wednesday. Based on their league standings, the sides then enter a knockout stage to decide placings with the teams in Group A. These are Belgium (the favourites), France, Gibraltar and Spain. The final is played on Friday at Gallicano. The management and players wish to thank their sponsors for all their help. These include Manx Telecom, Bibby Line, Sefton Hotel, SMV Engineering and the Lottery Trust. Without their generosity this venture would not have taken place. ###################################################################################### St Johns, the holders of the Tinker Cup, face a difficult semi-final . In the draw made on Manx Radio, they are away to the winners of the Valkyres v Ramsey tie which is played tomorrow. In the other semi Union Mills are at home to Peel. The matches go ahead on Sunday 3rd July with the reserve date (in case of rain) being Sunday 10th July. The games are kindly sponsored by Collins Stewart. ###################################################################################### Ricky Kniveton has been accepted as one of the ECC nominations to the MCC Young Cricketers Scheme. The 17 year-old Crosby wicket keeper-batsman is currently playing for Repton School in Derbyshire and for Chesterfield Cricket Club in the Derbyshire County League. Ricky’s name was put forward by the Isle of Man Cricket Association in response to an ICC initiative made available to all Affiliate and Associate Member countries. The offers are limited to those young cricketers, aged 17 to 19 who have represented their countries at Under 19 level or above. During his two-week period at Lord’s, Ricky will benefit from expert coaching, intensive playing programmes and the world class facilities available at Lord’s. Places on such courses are by definition, extremely limited, and are aimed at young cricketers deemed to have the potential to enjoy successful careers in county and representative cricket. The news of Ricky’s selection was announced at a recent celebration attended by His Excellency, the Lieutenant Governor, and members of the MCC and the IOMCA that was held to mark the IOMCA’s 75th anniversary. Ricky was unable to be present at this function, but passed on his appreciation for all the IOMCA’s support during the past 6 years that have enabled him to become a member of Derbyshire’s age group teams as well as playing at the highest level in club cricket in Derbyshire. Ricky will travel to Lord’s to commence his course on the 22nd August, and is hoping that the experience will stand him in good stead when Repton travel to Sri Lanka for a fortnight’s tour after Christmas. This follows the disappointment but also good fortune of having to cancel the tour last Boxing Day, due to the tragic event of the Asian Tsunami. Another young player making an impression is Castletown’s Duncan Miller. In the recent match against Ronaldsway he hit 55 which included 5 fours and one six. This came on the back of innings of 32no and 34. His “B” team batting average is now over 66. Duncan is developing as a seam bowler and also an athletic fielder. He is one of many teenagers coming through the Town’s ranks, such as Bradley Marshall, Sam Peel and Alex Messenger. Many supporters now think they are “carrying” some of Castletown’s older players! Cronkbourne Aces and Crosby were involved in a tense finish during their recent Under 13 match. Batting first the Marown side made 87, thanks to a solid partnership between Damien Baker and Alex Wilson. Cronkbourne got off to a good start. However a run out by Darren O’Hare and two quick wickets from Damien Baker meant the Aces needed eight runs from the last over. Keeping his nerve and with just three balls left, Alex Stokoe cracked two boundaries to get victory for the Tromode team.
