European Umpires at Maccabi Games
The 17th Maccabiah, to be held between 10-21 July and 4 ICC Development Program European Umpires, Ken Amos, Richard Smith, Niels Bagh and Steve Tovey, will be joining local Umpires (Naor Gudker, Norman Sankar and Hillel Awaskar) to officiate at the tournament. The tournament will include over 65,000 athletes, of which approximately 4,500 will be coming from abroad, from 45 different countries. The largest delegation will be coming from the United States, approximately 800 athletes. 103 events in the different categories (senior, youth, masters, male, female) will be held at venues across the country. Many sports, like cricket, will be bringing expert officials to officiate in the tournament. Although competition starts on 10 July, the official opening ceremony will be held on Monday evening, 11 July, in front of a crowd of 45,000 including many dignatries. The cricket will be played at two venues – Hadar Yosef which is in Tel Aviv, and Ashdod, which is a 40-minute drive south of Tel Aviv along the coast. There are two grounds at both locations that will be used. The schedule includes teams from Australia, Great Britain, South Africa, India and Israel who will compete in the senior section, and all the above except for India in the youth (U18) section. Australia and South Africa traditionally send very strong teams, and the biggest name in the tournament will be South African Adam Bacher. The Israeli junior side, which has achieved excellent results in European tournaments, is eagerly awaiting the challenge expected from their peers from abroad. |
