Saints wrap up Standard Bank League title
Maurice Trace
St Johns have won the Standard Bank League. On Saturday they beat second placed Ramsey by six wickets to retain the title. The Northerners batted first and were soon pinned back by accurate bowling. After twenty overs the score stood at 40 for 0 as the Saints took control of the match. Ramsey stepped up the scoring rate but soon lost both openers with the arrival of Greg Hawke in the attack. Ollie Webster at number three hit out and cracked a fine 36 which included 5 fours. However Greg ripped through the middle order. Adam Peel hit an aggressive 25 before becoming his fifth victim. Sharp fielding led to two run outs and the innings closed on 148 for 9. In reply openers Grant Atchinson and Jaco Jansen set off at a rapid pace. With the total on 24, Grant was dismissed by Webster and St Johns began to falter. Joe Berry came on first change and took three wickets to put the game in the balance at 79 for 4. However Jaco then took control and hammered the ball in a great dispaly. Aided by Jim Murphy he blasted his side to victory. At just after six o’clock, Jansen smashed a six and a four to win the match and the title. Jaco finished on a fine 77 not out and Jim Murphy was 29 not out. Cronkbourne had a good win over Valkyres. The Tromode team ran up 229 for 5 with Graeme Garrett continuing his good form with 88 not out. Max Stokoe made an excellent 49 not out and Chris Stockdale got 47. The hard worked Southern bowlers stuck to their task. Shiva Kumar took 2 for 43 and Keith Brew returned 2 for 42. Valkyres went for the runs, but the top order fell to two quick wickets from Phil Richardson. Nick Yates batted well to make a stylish 51 and Seb Hopkins cracked 28. Jasneet Singh took two wickets and there were dismissals also from Chris Stockdale, Neil Holmes and Steve Slack. Valkyres were dismissed for 176 to give Cronkbourne a well deserved victory by 53 runs. Castletown beat Finch Hill at Nobles Park by 5 wickets, but there were some scares along the way. Mike Allison top scored with 22 as the Finches were bowled out for 71. Connor Byrne took 4 -9, Dale Killa 2 -6 and Andy Sewell 2 -23. The Town batsmen were then rocked by a hostile spell from Peter Norris. The Finches opening bowler caused havoc with 3 for 17 as Castletown slumped to 32 for 4. Christian Steriopulos chipped in with a sparkling 36 and his side made their target, but not without losing another wicket to Tom Cowin. A five wicket success for the Town, but another example of Finch Hill’s steady improvement over the season. ##################################################################################### Castletown B have won promotion from the MAC Financial Forrester Two. The Southern side beat Valkyres C by eight wickets to take the championship. Batsmen dominated a match in which only four wickets fell. Dave Hopkins (20) and David Ballantine (14) got Valkyres away to a solid start. Then BrIn Snellgrove and James Matthews carried on the good work and the side finished on a healthy 141 for 2. BrIn cracked 41 not out and James was only one run away from a well deserved fifty. The two wickets to fall were claimed by Dave Griffiths and Stuart Marshall. Needing 143 to win, Dave and Ian Blackhurst saw Castletown away to a flyer. Ian had made 29 when he was bowled by a Dave Hopkins “special”. Duncan Miller arrived at number three and his score was 16 when Hopkins struck again. Ross McGarry joined Griffiths and the pair saw the Town to victory with two overs to spare. Dave finished on 48 not out and Ross was undefeated on 22.
