Island Under-15's keep up winning way in Europe

Maurice Trace

The Island Junior squad have made a marvellous start to the European Under 15 Championships in Italy with victories in their first two games.

On Monday they had a fine win over Greece. Man of the Match was Cronkbourne’s Luke Lacey who hit a great century and then took 3 wickets for just two runs.

The Manx batted first and got off to a flyer with an opening stand of 143 between Luke and Max Stokoe. Max was dismissed for 49, but Luke went on to score 103. Andrew Turner made a confident 38 and the side finished on 290 for 9.

Greece mad a valiant effort to get the runs, but encountered some top class Island bowling. Kane Dooley took 3 for 17 and there were wickets also for Seb Hopkins, Ollie Swales and Tom Howard.

At the end the Greeks were dismissed for 103 to give the Isle of Man a rousing start to their international fixtures.

On Tuesday the Island had another great result when they beat Germany by 115 runs.

Batting first the Manx made 230 for 6. Max Stokoe cracked a fine, Kane Dooley made 26 and Louis Thornton was 23 not out. Max and Kane featured in a stand of 94 for the third wicket.

Germany were then bowled out for 125. Luke Lacey returned 2 for 14, Kane Dooley 2 -15, Ollie Swales 2 for 17 and Max Stokoe 1 for 18.

Today (Friday) the Island Senior squad take a flight into the unknown.

The national side will travel to Belgium to play in the European Affiliate Championships. Also taking part are Croatia, Finland, Greece, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Spain and host country Belgium who are the hot favourites.

The games start on Saturday, but the first Manx match is on Sunday when they meet Greece at Mechelen. The next day they take on Portugal at Brussels and the tournament then moves into a Super 6 stage where they play against all the other teams. The finals come on Sunday 21st August.

The Island squad is led by captain Rob Webber (Ramsey) and includes Gareth Morris, Christian Steriopulos, Connor Byrne, Duncan Miller (Castletown) : Graeme Garrett, Pete Richards, Neil Holmes (Cronkbourne) : Juan Corlett (Finch Hill) : Ollie Webster, Graham Webb, James Atchinson, Adam Peel (Ramsey) : Keith Brew (Valkyres).

This is the first time the Island senior squad have played in a tournament of this calibre and results from their recent admission to the International Cricket Council.

The Blincoe Cup Final takes place on Sunday at Mullen-e-Cloie.

The match, which is sponsored by Isle Of Man Bank, sees Finch Hill take on Ramsey B. The Northerners overcame Grasshoppers in the semis while Finch Hill beat Crosby B.

The game is played over two innings per side with an 11-00am start. The side batting  first also bats last. The team going in second also bats again immediately after. The winning of the toss is vital as most captains prefer to bat first and last.

The day usually provides much entertainment and a good game. Ramsey have a good side, but Finch Hill probably have the greater experience. Some of their team, such as Phil Knights, Peter Foxton and Roy Corlett, are proven match winners.

However on the day it is usually strength in depth that counts. An innings consists of 16 eight ball overs with nobody allowed to put down more than two overs. That means at least eight people will bowl and its when numbers six onwards step up that the game can turn.
