Ricky Kniveton enjoys time with MCC Young Cricketers
"17 year-old Ricky Kniveton from Crosby CC spent a very interesting week with the MCC Young Cricketers in August following his successful nomination by the IOMCA. This nomination arose from the IOM's recent membership of the ECC, who arrange courses of this nature.
Under the watchful eye of former England and Middlesex batsman Clive Radley, Ricky joined the MCC YC squad for its three day Second XI Championship match played at Uxbridge against a strong Middlesex 2nd XI and, by agreement by the captains, was allowed to keep wicket for two sessions on the opening day. Ricky took a catch for the first wicket after lunch and kept competently throughout the afternoon and evening sessions. Unfortunately, rain washed out the following day and it wasn't until after lunch on the third day that the match resumed, with a predictable draw resulting.
The next day, Ricky was selected for the MCC YC's against Middlesex Under 19's in a 50 over match and again kept well, taking the only chance to come his way. Ricky was due to bat at number eight, but a fifth wicket partnership saw MCC to victory.
Most players in the MCC squad were in their early twenties and hoping to secure contracts with first class counties. It was unfortunate that the timetable precluded the opportunity for any meaningful coaching sessions, but the opportunity to play at such a standard was a further step up for the young wicket-keeper batsman and he is hopeful of returning next year for an extended visit."
