Jaco shines as St John's clinch unprecedented cleansweep of trophies

In an exciting match on Sunday, St Johns won the League Cup Final against Crosby and so became the first side to win all five major Island trophies.

Batting first Crosby were indebted to opener Ricky Kniveton. The young wicket-keeper batsman kept his head as wickets began to tumble and turned in a fine innings of 57 not out.

There was good support from Kevin Kniveton (19) and Jamie Tomlinson (18) as Crosby finished on a creditable 162 for 9. Scott Pearce was on top form with an inspired 3 for 13 from ten overs. Skipper Jaco Jansen took 3 for 34 and Dave Lockett spun his way to 3 for 20..

When the Saints came to bat Jamie Tomlinson was soon amongst the wickets. However Jansen rescued his side with an outstanding 86 not out. Aided by Nick Hawke, who cracked 31, St Johns took control of the game.

But, when all hope seemed lost, Crosby struck back with some late dismissals. They would not give up and the Saints finally got home with only three wickets left.

Jamie Tomlinson took 2 for 21 and Scott MacGregor had a good spell to finish on 2 for 16. There were also wickets for Kevin Quine, Dave Kinley and Gareth Rowlands.

This concludes a stunning year for St Johns. They have dominated local cricket and during the season lost only two league matches. The club has also developed their Mullen-e-Cloie ground to make it one of the best on the Island.

Credit as well to Crosby who came second in the Standard Bank League and certainly ran the Saints close in this Cup Final. It has been a remarkable turn around from a team which came bottom of the league in 2004. Their faith in a youth policy reaped rewards and promises much for the future.

In the annual Presidents Day Match at Tromode on Saturday, the Island Select beat the Rest Of The Island by 11 runs.

Batting first in a splendid game, the Island made a disastrous start and looked on the verge of defeat when they struggled to 22 for 6.  Great seam bowling from Connor Byrne, Andy Sewell and Garreth Roome caused the collapse.

Connor’s eight overs cost only four runs and Garreth’s first spell saw him take 2 wickets for four runs from five overs. Andy was also on song with 3 for 23.

However Graeme Garrett and Chris McConnell came to the Island’s rescue and put on a stand of 85 before Chris was dismissed by Steve Slack for an aggressive 42.  A couple more wickets fell before Mark Entwisle joined Graeme.

The pair then frustrated their opponents with a stand of 47 before the innings closed on 156 for 8. Garrett finished with an excellent 57 not out and Entwisle contributed an invaluable 15 not out.

In reply The Rest Of The Island found runs hard to come by and were 29 for 1 after 15 overs.  Chris McConnell and Mark Riley bowled accurately and pinned down the batsmen.

The Rest increased the pace but started to lose wickets. Garreth Roome hit a lively 22, but then Graeme Garrett stepped in with a match winning 4 wickets for 39. In a close finish The Rest ended on 145 for 8 – just eleven runs short of their target.
