Cricket – Caleta Hotel League

GRAMMARIANS PUSH FOR TITLE.

Grammarians CC’s victory against bottom Club PGCC moved them up to second place in the Caleta Hotel League and keeps up their hopes of their first Senior League title since 1978, in what promises to be the closest run title race in many years.   Highlights of the Saturday match were an opening stand of 140 by Mark Bacarese and Kabir Mirpuri for Grammarians, an undefeated century from the latter, and fighting innings of 81 by Aldrin D’Silva and 54 by Michael Jacobson for PGCC.

Grammarians run spree.

Grammarians CC won the toss, opted to bat first and proceeded to put the PGCC bowlers to the sword as Bacarese and Mirpuri both raced past their half centuries, before the former fell in the last ball of the 20th. over for 84.    There was to be no respite for PGCC after the mid-innings break as Ryan Gonzalez joined Mirpuri and they defied all efforts to dislodge them.   At the end of the allotted forty overs, the Grammarians total stood at an impressive 255/1; the least said about PGCC’s bowling figures the better!    Mirpuri finished on 103 and Gonzalez on 39.

PGCC fight back.

PGCC’s bowling attack may be somewhat lacking, but their batsmen have done well for them in this their first season at senior level.  After losing the wickets of Manish Grover (21) and Hetal Shah (20), Jacobsen and D’Silva put on 65 runs for the third wicket, the total standing on 123/2 at the twenty overs stage.    As so often happens, the mid-innings drinks break changed the course of the game dramatically as Dheeraj Punjabi bowled Jacobsen, and this exposed the soft under belly of the PGCC batting line up.    D’Silva went on to score 81 but wickets fell cheaply at the other end, PGCCC being all out for 224 in the fortieth over.   For Grammarians, Neil Emerson returned figures of 3/45 and Sebastian Suarez 2/52.   Grammarians took 21 points from the game to PGCC’s three batting points.
