Holland & Belgium Anniversary Fixture

It seems incredible that August 27th, 2005 was the 100th anniversary of the first International match between Belgium and Holland. Selfishly, Ken Farmiloe and Alex de la Mar decided to organise an Over 40s match so that they both could play. Belgium attempted unsuccessfully to make it an Over 43s match so that Roland Lefebvre would be too old to play!

Holland won the toss and decided to bat and could only muster 145 off 40 overs. Lefebvre showed why he was picked for Holland as a bowler by using agricultural tactics in his short innings. However, when Belgium batted, his accurate bowling was the difference between the two teams as Belgium failed by 7 runs ending on 138-7. After the match, the teams enjoyed a wonderful curry pot and Alex de la Mar gloatingly presented himself with De Telegraaf Cup. As everyone enjoyed the day so much, it was agreed to make it an annual fixture.

Holland excelled during the evening and into the early hours in the many bars visited in the centre of Antwerp.
