Oswald "Ossie" Van Moer (1947-2005)
It is with enormous sadness and a very deep sense of loss that the Belgian Cricket Federation must announce the death on Wednesday of its President, Oswald (Ossie) Van Moer.
Ossie’s humour, hospitality and love of the game were legendary in Belgium and to every cricketer from other countries who had the very good fortune to meet him. He was a larger than life character and was the soul of the Mechelen Cricket Club which will sorely miss him.
He played a significant and valuable role in Belgian cricket for three decades through both his club,
Mechelen CC, and the Federation. He served on the Federation committee at various times and
was elected President in 2004. As such, he was key to the process that gained
Belgium Associate status of the ICC this year.
In addition to his untiring work for Mechelen CC, the Federation and cricket, he was in the first group to qualify as a Level One coach in Belgium.
His sports interests extended to umpiring hockey, although he had given this up some time ago.
Ossie’s generosity of spirit, his laughter, good humour and his immense input to our sport will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
The Federation would like to express its sincerest condolences and deepest sympathy to his wife, Lydia,
and to Sven and Steve, his two sons.
