Manx Cricket has won a top international award.

The Island’s Coaches Association has been selected as the European Winner for the 2005 ICC Development Program in the category of Best Spirit of Cricket Initiative. This arises from their “Have A Go” scheme run last year in collaboration with Lloyds TSB.

This brought cricket into sixteen primary schools on the Island. The coaches were led by Christian Steriopulos and Chris Stockdale with backing from Dave Hopkins. They took over PE lessons to teach children Kwik Cricket.

As a result the curriculum in the schools changed to include cricket as a sport on timetables. In addition an inter-schools competition was set up with different areas competing against each other.

This concluded with a Finals Day which involved youth at all levels. Students from secondary schools who were completing PE qualifications also took part by umpiring and general involvement.

From this initiative, and in conjunction with the Manx Youth Games, most of the clubs on the Island “adopted” teams to form an Under Elevens League. Eight sides took part, bringing nearly a hundred children into the sport.

The matches were played each Friday at the same venue. The Finals at Cronkbourne proved to be one of the nosiest and most enjoyable days of the year! Over seventy children took part with more than fifty parents giving their support.

The Coaches association would like to thank Paul Macauly of Lloyds TSB for his enthusiastic support of the project. The initiative will continue this year and again Lloyds TSB will be the main sponsors.

Manx ECB qualified coaches have again offered their services to all primary schools. It is one of their objectives that every interested child on the Island will get the opportunity to play cricket. The support received from schools and individual teachers has been overwhelming.

In 2006 leader Christian Steriopulos will be joined by Brian James from Zimbabwe. He is currently working at Rathkeale in New Zealand where he coaches cricket and other sports.

Anybody wanting further information with the Scheme, or wishing to join the Coaches Association, should contact chairman David Slack on 617609.

The prize awarded to the Island is one thousand dollars worth of Kookaburra equipment. The ECC will now put forward the Manx Scheme as the European entry for the ICC Global Awards which will be announced at the end of March.
