Over the past few years there has been talk about starting a Ladies’ Cricket Team in Jersey. This came to a head when the Jersey Cricket Development Officer, Chris Minty, was approached by a couple of ladies who wanted to know if he could organise a Ladies Cricket Team. Chris then contacted Gemma Dunning and I to see if we would be interested to set up some coaching sessions.

Hence, we chose to start off with some ‘taster sessions’ which commenced in June 2005. We were both surprised and delighted to see such a good and positive turn out to these sessions with up to 20 ladies attending, and this ran until September 2005. As this had been such a success, we capitalised on this by offering winter indoor sessions which necessitated us writing letters and offering our ladies membership of the JICC which would then give us a base and identity to work with, and present an important opportunity to develop ladies cricket in Jersey.

Our winter sessions have just ended and we have had a great attendance, which has been particularly impressive during this dark cold winter. The ladies have been really enthusiastic and have thus improved immensely. We have come on leaps and bounds since last year and have started using proper equipment which we are putting to good practice using our newly acquired skills in the nets and this will continue when we start outdoor sessions in May.

We are setting ourselves targets for the future of ladies’ cricket, which will hopefully get better in the future. This year, as we continue with outdoor nets sessions, I am hoping to organise a couple of friendly matches against the Guernsey Sirens, (the Guernsey ladies team) both in Jersey and in Guernsey and obviously this would be a fantastic opportunity for our ladies to gain both experience and practice in a real life cricket match. We will also be approaching schools to get them involved.
