MacNee blitz too much for Ronaldsway in the Blincoe Cup

Maurice Trace

Cricket

A brilliant innings by Richard McNee took Crosby to victory in the first round of the Blincoe Cup.

The Marown batsman opened the innings against Ronaldsway and smashed a dazzling 99 not out. The Southerners claimed an early wicket, but Richard took the attack to them.

First with Andrew Turner and later Ollie Swales, he put Crosby in a dominant position. Alas he could not quite reach a well deserved century as the overs ran out.

The innings finished on 169 for 2 with Richard just one run short of the magic “ton”. Ollie was also still there at the end on a fine 38 not out.

Ronaldsway went for the runs and Steve Watterson lead from the front with a blistering 55. Juan Kinvig gave good backing with 17 before being stumped by Mark Quinn.

Any hopes the Southerners had of success faded with the arrival of Colin Kniveton in the attack. Aided by another stumping from Quinn, he finished a bright spell with three for fifteen.

Mark Swales took two wickets as Ronaldsway ended on 135 for 8. So a 34 run win for Crosby who are now at home to Finch Hill in the second round.

There are many worried faces around Mullen-e-Cloie.

St Johns have not made the best of starts to retain their Standard Bank League title. However, their record of one win from four games does not tell the full story. Included in that sorry return are two abandoned matches.

Last Saturday their clash with Valkyres fell victim to the weather. That meant one point for each side, but rivals Crosby notched up four points by beating Finch Hill in sunny Marown.

They have now opened up a gap of six points at the top of the table – and they have a game in hand over the Saints.

So St Johns will be keen to get back to action this week-end and narrow that divide.

That could happen as Crosby have a very tricky fixture against the in-form Castletown and Cronkbourne are the visitors to Mullen-e-Cloie.

The last time the Tromode side beat St Johns in the Karran was way back in 2001. It will take a mighty effort from Phil Richardson’s team to reverse that trend.

Today (Friday) the Lloyds TSB Under 11 League begins with a record number of entries. Ten teams will be at Tromode to play the first two rounds of the competition. .

St Johns are amongst the favourites, but the dark horses are new entry Crosby and 2004 winners Castletown. However last year’s winners Cronkbourne must be most people’s tip to take the title – but it could be very close.

IN THE SLIPS

*  In the second round of the Lancashire Cup, St Johns will play Thornton Cleveleys who defeated Longridge on Sunday. The game was abandoned due to the weather and Thornton went through on the toss of a coin.

*  Injury Corner : Crosby’s Jamie Tomlinson has been sidelined with a knee injury.

*  Spare a thought for the players of Peel B and Valkyres B. By now each team should have played four fixtures – but all have been abandoned because of rain.

*  Ramsey members are being sponsored in the Parish Walk for the Mark Webber Pavilion Fund. Those brave athletes taking part are Nigel Boyde, Eddie Cleator, Rob Webber, Graham Webb, Ollie Webster, Stu McConnell and Brian Arnold.

*  25 Years Ago : Finch Hill are the team to beat, having won all four of their games. A good three wicket win over Ramsey saw Ian Tomlinson take 2 -20 and John Scowcroft hit 48no. Strangely by the end of May no batsman had scored a fifty. The nearest contender was Peter Luft with 49.

*  The next meeting of the Island Executive will be held on Tuesday 13th June at the Cronkbourne Pavilion in Tromode. Start time is 7.30pm.
