Calpe CC head league table
TJF
CALPE SET THE PACE.
Calpe CC, now at almost full strength with students back from the UK., proved too strong Grammarians. Notable amongst Saturday’s match were a five wicket haul by spinner Iain Latin and an unbeaten half century from Karan Aswani.
Grammarians succumb to Latin’s wiles.
Grammarians won the toss, chose to bat first and were given a slow start by Mark Bacarese and Ross Harkins, only 28 runs coming in the opening twelve overs. Chris Phillips, who bowled tidily throughout, struck the first blow for his side, having Harkins caught behind by Kabir Mirpuri – incidentally the first of three wicket-keepers used by Calpe in the match! Shaun Ainsworth then kept Bacarese company whilst a further 39 runs accrued, but runs continued to be difficult to get and by the time Ainsworth became the first of Latin’s victims, stumped by Aswani, 21 of the allotted fifty overs had gone. There followed a dramatic batting collapse as six wickets tumbled for the addition of only 21 runs and although Richard Buzaglo scored 33, the side was dismissed for a paltry 123 in 45 overs. Latin returned the excellent figures of 5/28 off his ten overs, Phillips took 2/30 and young Karan Sadhwani 2/15.
David Young and Mirpuri gave Calpe CC an excellent start, putting on 49 runs in the opening nine overs before Chris Watkins trapped the former leg before; he had scored 38 of the 49 runs scored and had looked capable of winning the game on his own. Watkins struck again with the total on 63, getting Mirpuri well caught in the covers by Steve Cary, but that was to be the fielding side’s last success as Aswani and Latin scored the necessary 61 runs with 25 overs to spare. Aswani’s winning hit also brought his half century. It has to be added that Grammarians did not help their cause by dropping several catches. Watkins took 2/38 off his ten overs. Calpe thus went home with twenty points to go top of the Senior League, whilst Grammarians took a solitary bowling point.
Next Week.
There are no Senior League matches scheduled for next week-end as Gibraltar’s squad travel to Tangier as part of their preparations for the forthcoming European Championships in Glasgow early next month.
