Swiss Under 11 girls play their first matches

On the weekend of June 17th/18th in the dramatic surroundings of the Swiss Alps that rise up above the village of Zuoz, near St. Moritz, the first Under 11 junior Zuoz Tournament got under way. Among the teams from Zurich, Geneva, Basle and Munich were a number of girls. This was the first time they had been involved in matches.

In the perfect setting of the huge driving range of the Zuoz golf course which boasts 3 cricket pitches, with cloudless skies and a large number of supporters, the matches got under way after a short opening ceremony at which the Lyceum’s headmaster Beat Sommer expressed his full support for the competition.

The girls, who numerically dominated the Basel side and made up a good third of the Geneva one, performed as well as their male counterparts and demonstrated that full girl’s teams in the three Swiss centres are near to becoming a reality.

The cricket matches were played in the best spirit and already to a standard which can only be admired. In between matches, most of the players spent all their spare time in the nets. By the end of the weekend the strong development of both individual skill and team spirit was clear.

At the 2nd Basle Indoor Tournament, which is planned for mid-November, the young Under 11 girls will be able to form complete teams and will be competing against boys of their own age. The outcome is far from a foregone one.
