PKF Wanderers win Weekend Division One
David Piesing
PKF Wanderers second team the second team of Randy Paddle Mavericks by 22 runs to clinch the Carey Olsen Weekend Division One title.
Batting first after winning the toss, Wanderers made 174 for 6 in 40 overs, with Guernsey Under-14 all-rounder Tom Kirk making a fine unbeaten 49, putting on a rapid 55 with Phil Dodd in the last 7 overs to give Wanderers a score which was always going to test Mavericks on a wicket receptive to spin. Martin Baxter was the pick of the Mavericks bowlers with 3 for 14 from 8 overs.
In reply, Phil Dodd ripped out the top 4 of the Mavericks order with a fine spell of seam bowling, taking 4 for 29 from 8 overs. Baxter and Tom Kimber then threatened with a useful partnership before Baxter became one of Kirk's three victims with a fine 35. Kimber eventually holed out for 27 to Max Ellis at deep wicket, very well caught by Will Thompson running in, and despite some late blows from Jonny Orme the target proved too much for Mavericks, falling short by 22 runs after being bowled out for 152. Kirk took 3 for 34 from 10 overs of quality offspin, taking his league tally to 14 wickets from three games at a cost of just 5 runs apiece.
