Calpe forge ahead in Senior League
TJF
CALPE OPEN GAP AT THE TOP.
Calpe CC, with their fourth victory in as many Senior League outings, this time against Combined Colleges, have opened a significant gap at the top of the Senior League. Chief architects of their latest success were Chris Phillips (51 not out) and John Hazell (42 not out).
Combined Colleges struggle for runs.
The men from the Costa won the toss, opted to bat first and lost their first wicket with only eleven runs on the board. Mark Ward and Alex Fateth then set about retrieving the situation with a second wicket stand of 65, but these runs were slow in coming against some tight bowling, and when Ward finally went, caught behind by Hazell off the bowling of Kabir Mirpuri, twenty-two of the allotted fifty overs had gone. When Karan Sadhwani claimed the wicket of Fateth (41) and Adam Orfila struck twice, the Combined Colleges total had slumped to 147/5. However, a quick-fire 50 from Ashan Alwis (off just 37 balls) and 22 from Michael Berger enabled the batting side to reach 175 before being all out in the 39th. over. For Calpe CC., Mirpuri returned figures of 3/40, and Adam Orfila 2/17.
Calpe CC lost the early wicket of Karan Aswani, after which Phillips and Mirpuri took the total along to 55. When the latter was caught at deep mid-on, Paul Buttigieg kept Phillips company for a while before having his stumps shattered by Ashan Alwis. This brought Hazell to the crease and Calpe seemed to be cruising to victory as Phillips duly reached his half century. However, with the total on 113, Phillips had to retire hurt, having injured his toe in attempting to drive the ball, and this brought the inexperienced Vivek Sadhwani to the crease. The youngster, however, stood firm whilst Hazell continued to punish anything loose, and the required 66 runs for victory were achieved without further loss. Ronnie Bates took 2/31 for Combined Colleges who went home with three points to Calpe’s seventeen
