3 wins out of 4 for Jersey clubs in opening round of CI Championship games

David Piesing

The first round of the KPMG Channel Islands Club Championship saw victories for three Jersey clubs and just one win by a Guernsey club. All four winning teams batted second.

In Group A, Jersey champions Sporting Club Francais opened with a 10-wicket victory over Guernsey's C&W Rovers at Grainville. After being hit by the late withdrawal of all-rounder Tim Duke, Rovers were restricted to 192 for 9. Opener Quentin Hubbard continued his excellent recent form with 92, but the next highest scorer was Extras with 48, including 32 wides. Jack Waters took 3 for 44. In reply, The SCF opening pair of Steve Carlyon (102 not out) and Matt Hague (75 not out) compiled yet another huge opening partnership, getting their side home with 16.2 overs to spare.

In the same group, Jersey's St Ouen entertained a weakened Total Cobo side at FB Fields but Cobo's young side proved up to the task with an 8-wicket victory in match slightly affetced by rain, resulting in 2 overs being lost and the Cobo target being reduced to 144 under Duckworth-Lewis. . St. Ouen were bowled out for 152, with only A Kay (42), Paul Horton (29) and Dave Morfee (27) making contributions. Veteran Guernsey off-spinner Gary Rich took 3 for 28 and young legspinner Luke Nussbaumer returned 2 for 20. Cobo lost Justin Ferbrache early in reply, but Robbie Moore (45 not out), Peter Vidamour (41) and Jamie Nussbaumer (36 not out) saw Cobo romp home with 13 overs to spare.

In Group B, Jersey's Old Victorians beat Guernsey champions Clubhouse Optimists by 3 wickets with 7 balls to spare at KGV. Optimists made 273 for 6 in their 45 overs, with GH Smit (66), Ami Banerjee (51), Tim de Putron (41) and Mark Clapham (32) all contributing. OVs opened with the Gough twins, Peter and Jonny, and the pair put on 75 before Peter fell to Mark Jefferies. Jonny went on to a make a fine 87 before he was dismissed by Mark Clapham, but Andy Dewhurst (37) and Ward Jenner (25) kept OVs in the hunt. There were useful contributions all the way down the order but number seven Bobby Minty struck some big blows in a rapid unbeaten 36 to see his side over the line. Optimists were hampered by seamer Steve Queripel only being to bowl 5 of his 9 overs after suffering a stomach upset, and OVs took full advantage against Optis' occasional bowlers.

At Port Soif, Randy Paddle Mavericks had the misfortune to find themselves up against an in-form Ryan Driver who out in a fine all-round performance in a comprehensive 8-wicket victory for Romerils. Batting first, Mavericks collapsed to 50 for 5 and then 60 for 6 but skipper Justin Walker (65) and Andy Burkhardt (30) dug deep to enable their side to reach a more respectable 172. Peter Blackburn took 4 for 48 and Driver took 3 for 33. Although Mavericks took two early wickets, they couldn't shift opener Ian Crocker (48 not out) but it was Driver who provided the fireworks with a very impressive and rapid unbeaten 88, taking his side to victory with more than 11 overs to spare.
