Jersey defeat Norway to reach semi-finals
Jersey recovered from Saturday’s defeat by France in an eventful Second Division Championship to beat Norway in their final Pool 2 game and join them in the semi-finals. They will now take on undefeated Hellas on Tueday, while the Norwegians will play Germany. In the other final match of the preliminary phase Israel pulled off a surprise win over France, but they finished below Jersey on run-rate. Rain during the morning caused a delayed start and a reduction of the match between Norway and Jersey at Langloan, Coatbridge to 40 overs. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Norway soon found themselves 26 for four, largely due to an effective spell from seamer Mark Salaris, who took three for 30. Opener Zaheer Ashiq kept them in the game with a solid 56, and after he was dismissed Safir Hayat and Munawar Ahmed added 77 for the seventh wicket, almost doubling the total and enabling Norway to finish on 168 for nine. Jersey opener Ian Crocker was dismissed with his side on 17 in reply, but then 21-year-old Peter Gough and skipper Mathew Hague took over, putting on 158 in an unbroken second-wicket partnership to see the islanders home with nearly five overs to spare. At New Anniesland, where the game started early enough to avoid any reduction in the overs, France won the toss for the third time in a row and again elected to bat first. The hero of the innings was 20-year-old opener Arun Ayyavooraju, who carried his bat for 75 not out as his side made 175 all out in exactly fifty overs. He was well supported by Rasu Raguthas in a fourth-wicket stand of 57 of which Raguthas contributed 33, and then, after France had been reduced to 111 for eight, fighting innings by tailenders Khalid Abdul and Rajani Sithambaranathan, who helped him add 64 for the last two wickets. Wickets fell regularly in the Israeli reply, and at 54 for four they seemed to be in trouble. But Sanjay Gupta and Raymond Aston turned the innings round with a stand of 60, and after Aston was bowled by Shabir Hussain Adrian Vard helped Gupta take the total through to 143. Gupta was eventually out for 40, caught by Khalid Abdul off Tahir Saeed, but Vard and Shai Hayun then brought their side to the brink of victory. Hayun was out nine runs short of the target;Vard, however, was not to be denied, and Israel won off the first ball of the 47th over. Shabir Hussain was the pick of the French bowlers, taking three for 14 in an economical ten-over spell. |
