Scots scrape home despite Danish onslaught

It was in the darkening gloom of Glasgow that the Danes needed 13 off the last over to win. The first ball went for four, the next balls were twos and singles and off the final ball the Danes needed four to win but Zishan Shah missed it and the Scots won by three runs on the Duckworth Lewismethod .

The day had started in greyness but it was dry but the unsettled weather meant that play stopped three times. The last stoppage meant a reduction of overs. This was the first time Scotland played at Annisland with its fine plush outfield and a pitch that had no grass on it. Although the locals say it plays slow and low both teams would bat first. The Scots won the toss and, of course, batted first, getting off to a good start with Watts and McRae before McRae was caught in the slips at 46. Watson tried to get things going but was bowled by Malcom-Hansen trying to sweep. Watts was joined by Hussein and they took the score to 137before Hussein skied to Chawla again off Malcolm-Hansen. Watts and McCallum then took control of the innings as Watts opened up and started to take the Danish bowling apart. The last ten overs cost 130 runs with 90 coming off the last 5. The Danes didn't seem to know where to bowl as Watts smashed 8 sixes and 10 fours as he amassed 171 runs off 154 balls with McCallum hitting 52 before being run out at the end. Scotlands large total of 298 for 4 looked a winning score.

Denmark however had no intention of giving up as Klokker and Michael Pedersen got the scoreboard ticking from the start despite the drizzle, and kept the Danish score par with the D/L par score. Rain intervened after 18 overs and after the restart Denmark lost wickets and the impetus. At 124 for 3 the rain came once again but this time the overs were reduced to 42 giving the Danes a target of 255. In other words 130 in 15 overs. The Danes went for the runs losing wickets in the proces but Malcolm-Hansen stood firm and found a partner in Bobby Chawla. They pushed the score with some daring running as SCotland made mistakes and dropped a couple of chances. With two overs to go Malcolm-Hansen was lbw for 54 and Bobby Chawla was caught for 24 but Zishan Shah continued with Yasir Iqbal as runs were scrambled. The Danes still had the chance wanting 13 off the last over but the ended up 3 runs short. Blain was the pick of the Scottish bowlers as he took 4 for 43 with good line and length while Malcom Hansen took 3 for 31 in his 10 overs avoiding the Scottish onslaught.

This was one of the best displays of determined batting for many years from the Danes batting second for and showed them to be a side that is easy to knock over, even against a Scottish side that have played much more cricket in recent monthd.
