Guernsey win senior B inter-insular

David Piesing

Guernsey won the annual senior B inter-insular by 33 runs at KGV. Both teams included several players who appeared for their islands in the European Championships in in Scotland and who are pushing for final places in the full inter-insular teams on 2 September in Jersey.

Guernsey batted first and collapsed to 40 for 4 after left-arm seamer Peter Blackburn (3 for 32) ripped out the top order. Man of the match and opener Richard Veillard (74), together with captain Stuart Bisson (32) then rescued Guernsey with a fine partnership of 82. Guernsey then suffered a further collapse to 139 for 7 before Pierre Moody (31) and Aaron Scoones (23 not out) put together a fine partnership of 60 for the 9th wicket in just 9 overs to take Guernsey to a very respectable 208 for 9 in 50 overs. Young legspinner Sam Dewhurst took 3 for 37 from seven overs.

Jersey soon lost three early wickets to seamer Moody and lost further wickets steadily to off-spinner Scoones, who took 3 for 17 from his 10 overs, and to Bisson, who returned figures of 3 for 18 from 8 overs. Blane Queripel picked up the remaining wicket as Jersey were bowled out for 175. Justin Le Fort was the only top-order batsman to get established, making 51, and the other main resistance was from the 9th-wicket pair of left-arm seamers, skipper Nigel Crocker (27 not out) and Peter Blackburn (25), who put on 53 for the 9th wicket.

It was a fine all-round team bowling and fielding performance by Guernsey, with the batting bailed out earlier by two excellent partnerships. Veillard, Moody, Scoones and Bisson will have done their full inter-insular selection chances no harm at all and will have given the selectors plenty of food for thought.
