THE TWO FACES OF CALPE CC.

The week-end Senior League matches saw the two faces of Calpe CC., the Club formed in 1997 as a nursery for up and coming young cricketers. On Saturday at the Victoria Stadium, missing two of their top players but still able to turn out quite a strong side, they swept aside the feeble challenge of GCC to virtually assure themselves of the Senior League title. On Sunday, on the other hand, with a badly depleted team with an average age of sixteen, they went down heavily to Combined Colleges, thereby giving the men from the Costa their first win of the season.

GCC batting collapse.

GCC won the toss, opted to bat first and made a disastrous start, losing half their side with only 42 runs on the board. David Knipe and Gary De’Ath then set about bringing some respectability to the total with a sixth wicket stand of 59 before the latter edged Adam Orfila into the gloves of wicket-keeper Kabir Mirpuri for 20. Knipe went on to his half century but the tail was destined not to wag and the whole side was dismissed for 142 in 32.3 overs. Chris Phillips and Iain Latin took two wickets apiece for Calpe and there were three run outs.

Phillips (68) and Mirpuri (38 not out) set about putting the result beyond all doubt with an opening partnership of 139, the former falling to a stunning catch by De’Ath at short mid-wicket with just four runs required for victory, but GCC’s paltry total was passed in the 32nd. over. Calpe took nineteen points from the game, whilst GCC went home empty-handed.

Combined Colleges open their account.

Calpe turned up at Europa without Karan Aswani, Chris Phillips, John Hazell and David Young and were forced to include some twelve and thirteen year-olds in their side, but all credit to them that they managed to fulfil the fixture. Batting first they lost the early wicket of Vivek Sadhwani after which Kabir Mirpuri (31) and Iain Latin (52) proceeded to put on 91 runs for the second wicket. However, the whole tenor of the innings changed dramatically in the seventeenth over when Paul Harris accounted for both in the space of three balls and this exposed the long Calpe tail, the side being dismissed for 144 in 32.5 overs. For Combined Colleges, Paul Harris returned figures of 3/43 and Nushan Alwis 3/15.

Chris Harris and Mark Ward gave their side a solid start with an opening stand of 71 before the latter was deceived by Latin’s flight and was bowled for 26. This brought hard-hitting Nushan Alwis to the crease, and with the help of some dropped catches he managed to hit 45 runs off just thirty balls whilst Chris Harris moved on to his half century. He fell with just two runs required for victory but Calpe’s total was passed with 10.3 overs to spare. Combined Colleges took eighteen points from the game to Calpe’s solitary bowling point.
