KPMG Club Championship Semi-Finals

David Piesing

The 2006 KMPG Channel Islands Club Championship will see Guernsey's Total Cobo take on Jersey's Sporting Club Francais on Saturday 9th September at Guernsey's KGV.

At FB Fields in Jersey, Cobo beat Old Victorians by 23 runs. Batting first, Cobo made 206 for 8 in their 45 overs, with Jeremy Frith top-scoring with 52. Skipper Stuart Le Prevost made 45 and opener Jamie Nussbaumer made 33, while Mark Renouf smashed two sixes in a brief knock of 15 right at the end of the innings to boost the score. Opening bowler Andy Dewhurst was the most successful OVs bowler with 4 for 40, while Tom Minty took 2 for 20 from his 9 overs. In reply, OVs established a solid platform thanks to Peter Gough's 45, but a middle-order collapse saw them reduced to 145 for 6. Tom Minty top-scored with 51 at number three, and although Andy Dewhurst (21) and Andy Brown (22) chipped in it wasn't enough and OVs were eventually bowled out for 183 with 3 overs left. Off-spinner Gary Rich took 3 for 24 from his 9 overs, while seamer Jamie Nussbaumer completed a good all-round day with 3 for 36 from his 9 overs. Le Prevost continued his recent record of picking up cheap wickets with 2 for 6.

At Grainville, the other semi-final was between two Jersey clubs, local champions Sporting Club and Romerils. The champions continued where they left off in the league with a huge score of 293 for 5 in their 45 overs. Skipper Matt Hague led the way with 108, supported by Meeku Patadar (83) and Steve Carlyon (51). Romerils needed a big score from former professional Ryan Driver if they were to threaten this total and Driver duly obliged with 117, but they fell 61 runs short after reaching 232 for 8 in their 45 overs.

So the final sees Sporting Club, with a 100% winning record all season, facing Cobo again. The two sides met in the group stage last week when both sides had already qualified for the semi-finals and with an under-strength Cobo receiving a 150-run thrashing, but neither side will be reading much into that result.
