Local Selections win all three matches against UK touring sides

TJF

CLEAN SWEEP FOR LOCAL SELECTIONS.

The three days leading up to National Day saw GCA selections involved in matches against touring sides from the United Kingdom. Leatherhead & Cobham from the Surrey area played on Thursday and Friday, and Stanton Awsworth & Elks CC from Nottingham were the visitors on Saturday. Highlights of these contests were centuries by Kabir Mirpuri in the second game against the visitors from Surrey, and Steven Gonzalez and George Moulds in the Saturday fixture, and good knocks of 85 and 56 on successive days by young Kieron Ferrary

Victories against Leatherhead & Cobham.

Leatherhead and Cobham batted first on the Thursday and got off to an electric start, reaching three figures with only eleven of the allotted forty overs gone, though losing three wickets in the process. A total close to 300 then seemed in prospect until Iain Latin intervened with his leg spin to sweep away the visitors’ middle order, and the whole side was eventually dismissed for 160 in the 30th. over. For Leatherhead and Cobham, Matt Baker contributed 55 runs, Latin ended with figures of 4/40, and there were two wickets apiece for Robbie Skinner and Charlie Harrison.

The GCA Select made heavy weather of such a modest total, losing their top four batsmen with 76 runs on the board and almost half the allotted overs gone. However, David Young and Richard Buzaglo then came together in a match-winning fifth wicket partnership of 85 to bring home victory with thirteen overs to spare. Young reached his half century with the winning hit.

It was a very different affair on the Friday as the GCA Select batted first and amassed a total of 238/5 in a match reduced to 35 overs due to the late arrival of the visitors., thanks in the main to an undefeated 103 by Mirpuri and a fine 85 by Kieron Ferrary. These two featured in a fourth wicket stand of 150. Undaunted by having to chase such a considerable total, the boys from Surrey fought hard, with Damian Robinson (50) and Dave Baker (42) leading the way. However, in the end the task proved too much for them as they ended on 201/9 at the end of their 35 overs. Skinner was again amongst the wickets with figures of 3/34.

Plenty of runs on Saturday.

The third match in as many days saw a different GCA select taking on the visitors from Nottingham, Stanton Awsworth Elks CC. The visitors batted first and found the rather weak GCA bowling attack to their liking, in particular George Moulds who struck 116 off just 68 balls. Contributions of 56 by Tom Smith and 37 by Ian Trueman enabled them to reach the impressive total of 268/8 in their forty overs. For the GCA Select, Adrian Hewitt returned figures of 4/57.

Ian Farrell and Kieron Ferrary struck 45 runs in the opening five overs before the former was run out for the second time in as many days. This brought Christian Rocca to the crease and his poor recent form continued when he edged a ball to the wicketkeeper, after which Steven Gonzalez helped Ferrary add a further 73 runs for the third wicket. When Ferrary’s long vigil at the crease ended just after he had reached his second half century in consecutive days, John Hazell joined Gonzalez who by then was in full flow and these two scored 114 required for victory with 3.4 overs to spare. Gonzalez ended on 118 and Hazell on 27.
