Austria's Future Challenge Cup
Lukas Dobner
Participating teams were: Austria Cricket Club Wien under11, Swiss under 11, Austria Cricket Club under 15, Oldenburg CC youth, Tegernsee CC youth. Day 1 What a great day to start the annual Future Challenge Cup, Youth tournament. Not a cloud in the Sky but a cool breeze to keep us from roasting in the sun. I had been at the ground since 8:00 with some other players to prepare for the spectators and parents. At 9:00 the Swiss teams arrived, U11 and U15. The first match was to be for the U11 teams starting at 9:30. Our ACC U11 side was put in to bat first but a good bowling and fielding performance restricted the team to 39 all out off the 15 overs. The Swiss side was also a strong batting team and got the 42 runs off just 9.5 overs although Patrick the captain of ACC took the only 3 wickets for 5 runs in his 2 overs. The Swiss U15 won the toss and chose to bat. A dominant approach by the opposing batsman took them to 151-4 in 20 overs. We got of to a good start and were able to capitalize by getting to 155 in the last over. The second match for the U11 was rather the same as the first one. Our team was put in to bat first and it was another good performance in the field by the Swiss U11. We were unable to put up an imposing total and the Swiss managed to get their second win of the tournament. Our second match was restricted to a 20 over game due to the amount of time available. This time we won the toss and we put them in to bat first. The Swiss batsmen got a high total of 122-1. This time our batting was even better. All of our first five batsmen got over 20 runs and it took us to 126-2 with 11 balls to spare. Day 2 The second was the day the German teams arrived. The teams came from Oldenburg and Tegernsee. The first match between Oldenburg and Swiss. Oldenburg were all out for 44 and it was no problem for the Swiss getting the total. The second match was combination of the two German sides and this time they got 95-6 off 20 overs. The Swiss had some problems losing some early wickets but came back convincingly and won it with some spare overs. The final match was between the two German sides although they did borrow some of our players. Tegernsee won convincingly with 5 wickets to spare. Day 3 The first match was to be between Swiss and a combination of the two German sides. Again Swiss reduced them to a low total and were able to get the runs without too many problems. The next match was the last match for the U11 side. We batted first and it was a great improvement from the first game. The biggest improvement came in the field and bowling. The first over was a maiden and they didn’t get the total. It was a big improvement and a great performance by the side. The 3rd game was to be between us and Tegernsee. We put them into bat first and we got off to a good start taking early wickets. This including our youngest player, Navin, 11 years old taking a wonderful catch to dismiss their captain. Tegernsee got to 76 runs off 20 overs. We decided this was a great opportunity to let the younger players get some experience. Some of the players got out but everyone enjoyed themselves and we won with a few overs to spare. Day 4 Unfortunately on Sunday it started raining and although there were short periods where the weather looked promising it rained through and the German teams left early. Overall it was a brilliant tournament and I would like to thank Siva, Phillip and our sponsors everyone else for making this occasion possible. |
