Aussie Meades is Player of the Year
David Piesing
It was a great evening for Justin Meades at the 2006 Awards Dinner at the St. Pierre Park Hotel. The popular Victorian who plays his evening cricket for DHS St Pierre and his weekend cricket for Mavericks won the GCA Player of the Year and Weekend Player of the Year awards. To round off his night, he was also named one of the GCB's five Cricketers of the Year in a new annual Wisden-type award.
The talismatic Meades scored 652 runs in weekend cricket at an average of 65.20, including 3 centuries with a highest score of 146. He also made his senior debut for Guernsey in the inter-insular against Jersey.
The other four inaugural GCB Cricketers of the Year were Stuart Le Prevost, Richard Veillard, Ami Banerjee and GH Smit.
The GCA Young Player of the Year Award went to James Warr (Pessimists and Wanderers) who made 472 runs in the Evening League at an average of 78.6, together with 289 weekend runs at an average of 41.29. Warr also won the Evening League Division One Player of the Year Award.
Mark Clapham of Clubhouse Optimists won the Veteran of the Year award for his consistent performances at the top of the order.
Andy Biggins was awarded the GCB Chairman's Award for Services to Guernsey Cricket after standing down from the national team captaincy at the end of a 5-season reign. His tenure saw Guernsey win five successive inter-insulars and just 4 defeats in 27 matches, two of which were against World Cup sides Bermuda and Namibia, and the other defeat being against a very strong MCC side.
