News from Guernsey Youth Development squad tour to South Africa
David Piesing
Guernsey's Youth Development Squad, sponsored by Investec, are spending a week in Cape Town for the second year running. The squad consists of the Under-19 squad from 2006, boosted by two Under-20 players, James Warr and Blane Queripel.
Game 5
In the final match of their week-long tour, Guernsey made it 3 wins out of 5 with a 16-run win over Hermanus . Batting first, Guernsey made 179 for 9 off 40 overs. Chris Whitworth top-scored with 71 while James Warr made 29. In reply, the home side were restricted to 163 for 5 in their 40 overs.
Game 4
Guernsey bounced back from the defeat against Wynberg with a thrilling one-wicket victory against Fish Hoek with just 9 balls to spare. Chasing 162 all out in 40 overs, the islanders owed their victory to fine performances with the bat from Luke Nussbaumer (35 not out), Tom Strawbridge (35), Blane Queripel (34), Kris Moherndl (26) and Chris Whitworth (18).
Game 3
Guernsey put in another top performance with the ball and in the field against Wynberg (Alan Lamb's alma mater) but came unstuck with the bat.
Wynberg batted first and were restricted to 159 for 9 in 40 overs. Guernsey were bowled out for just 74 in 32 overs in reply, to lose by 85 runs. Manager David Nussbaumer said: "We were superb once again in the field and with the ball but were undone by some top quality bowling."
Game 2
The second game was a completely new experience for Guernsey's players - a day/night game under the lights against Bergvliet. The new conditions suited Guernsey who put up an outstanding performance to win by 26 runs in a 45-over game.
Again batting first, Guernsey made 176 all out, losing their last wicket off the last ball of the 45th and final over. Skipper Nussbaumer again led from the front with 75, while Queripel chipped in with 27. A score of 176 was somewhat disappointing after being 152 for 4 at one stage. Things looked bleak for Guernsey with the home site very comfortably placed at 108 for 2 after 32 overs, needing just over 5 an over off the last 13 overs with 8 wickets in hand. However, a superb sustained bowling and fielding performance from the visitors saw the home side pegged back. They were restricted to 150 for 7 in their 45 overs to fall 26 runs short.
Manager David Nussbaumer said: "It was an unbelievable experience playing under the lights. Blane (Queripel) bowled superbly and got both late and reverse swing in the first 10 overs. Pete (Le Hegarat) bowled brilliantly as did Jack (Byrne). Luke (Nussbaumer) could not spin the ball because of the dew but still took 1 for 29 off his 9 overs. I have never seen such an excellent all-round performance in the field - it was like watching a professional game. They were certainly pumped up by playing under lights for the first time."
Game 1
In the opening fixture against Belville Development XI, a batting collapse cost Guernsey dearly. Batting first, they had reached 85 for 3 but were disappointingly bowled out for just 114. Skipper Jamie Nussbaumer made 37 and Jonny Warr made 20. In reply, the home side lost three early wickets to the impressive pace of Blane Queripel who took 3 for 16 in 6 overs, but Guernsey struggled to make any further inroads and the home side won very comfortably by 6 wickets.
