Holland "A" to play 3-match series
David Piesing
The Guernsey Cricket Board (GCB) has announced that Holland will send an “A” team to Guernsey in May 2007 to play a three-match limited over series against Guernsey. The matches will take place on Wednesday 23rd, Thursday 24th and Friday 25th May, all at the island’s premier ground at KGV.
The series will be sponsored by Fortis Guernsey, part of the European financial services group that employs around 265 people in Guernsey and who will provide a trophy to be awarded to the winning team.
David Piesing, Chairman of the GCB, said: “This series follows on from the home series against Bermuda in 2006 and the games in the UK against the Scottish Academy, Bermuda and Namibia in 2005 which were all arranged to expose Guernsey’s best cricketers to high quality international opposition ahead of Guernsey’s first foray into European tournament cricket. Cricketing links have already been established between Guernsey and Holland through two of our age group sides having visited Holland in the last couple of years and from one of the Dutch age group sides having visited Guernsey in 2006 and it will be fantastic to see their senior “A” side here as well. We are extremely grateful to the Fortis Group for kindly agreeing to sponsor the series as this sponsorship has ensured that the series could go ahead.”
Roland Lefebvre, Manager of Cricket of the KNCB said: `The KNCB is extremely grateful to the Guernsey Cricket Board and Fortis Guernsey for making this three match series against Guernsey’s national side possible. With our national team participating in the 2007 World Cup in West Indies it is essential that our A team players get the right exposure. Looking at several retirements after this year’s World Cup it is most likely that some of the A players will get the opportunity to prove themselves at the highest level. This series could be a very important test for them.”
David Purdy, Senior Manager of Fortis Guernsey said: “The Fortis Group in Guernsey is delighted to be able to assist with the visit to the island of the Dutch ‘A’ squad in May and I am sure the series will generate a great deal of public interest as well as cementing the already well-established sporting/cricketing relationship between Guernsey and Holland.”
