Soccer star Matt Le Tissier to play Guernsey club cricket
David Piesing
Former Southampton and England soccer star Matt Le Tissier, arguably Guernsey's most famous export, has signed to play local weekend club cricket for Central Sports Mavericks in Guernsey's Carey Olsen Championship this season. One of his older brothers, Carl, opens the batting for Mavericks and Le Tissier could even up facing his 14-year old son, Mitchell, a young wickekeeper with Rovers.
As a non-resident, Le Tissier has to pre-commit to playing in at least 50% of Mavericks' Championship games in order to be eligible to play, and has committed to do so.
Le Tissier was a very useful schoolboy batsman until his soccer career took him to Southampton. He still holds the record for the highest innings in the Colts League (164), and has regularly played in benefit matches for players of Hampshire CCC over the years.
