Favourites Castletown struggle on opening day as Ramsey win despite David Quayle hat-trick

IOMCA

Saturday 28th April - Standard Bank League

Ramsey's batsman made Crosby struggle at RGS with Eddie Cleator making them pay for a dropped catch before he had scored with a rapid 61 as Ramsey raced to 178-3 after just 30 overs. Skipper Rob Webber made 41 and Ken Harding 38 but when Rob was well taken at long-off by Danny Kniveton it signalled a mini collapse as they fell to 197-7 before an eightth wicket partnership between Jamie Arneil and Brian Arnold took them to 242 only for David Quayle to finish them off with a hat-trick for figures of 5-39.

Crosby were soon in trouble as Chris McConnell removed Simon Watson with a beauty and Ollie Webster's yorker did for Danny Kniveton. Wickets fell regularly with only a defiant Andy Turner (15) and a late Mike Duchars efoort of 21 being of note in their 109 all out which included 43 extras!

Ken Harding had 3-22, Ollie Webster 2-22 and Chris McConnell 2-14 as Ramsey ran out easy winners. With Russell Miller and Charlie Whipp to come into their line-up they will be no push-overs.

Elsewhere St Johns were racking up 320-8 against Valkyres with Jon Norrington missing out on a ton when caught and bowled for 99. Scott Pearce made 64 and Nic Hawke 57. Abdul Khan took 4-55 for Valkyres.

At KWC a century from Norrington's Island team openimg partner Pete Richards (106*) saw last year's bottom team Cronkbourne on the way to a resounding victory over hot favourites Castletown. The Tromode side's new coach, Jeff Levin, made 66 not out in a big stand with Richards which saw them to 244-3. In reply Town were never in the game as the experience of Neil Holmes (3-13) and the youth of Max Stokoe (3-21) tore into their line-up, Castletown being 105 all out.

So the season got under way in fine weather with the majority of the Senior Island squad apparently showing the benefit of winter nets and coaching as most either made good runs or took wickets.
