Cronkbourne continue fine early season form
IOMCA
St Johns powered to a great ten wicket win over Crosby in the Standard Bank League on Saturday. The Saints were in tremendous form and restricted their Greeba rivals to 122 for 8 from 45 overs.
Simon Watson and Andrew Turner had made a good start for the Marown side with an opening stand of 58. Then Simon was caught by keeper Mike Oates off the bowling of Nick Hawke for 33 and wickets began to tumble. The scoring rate also slowed in the face of accurate bowling from Scott Pearce who conceded only seven runs in his eight overs.
Hawke also dismissed Turner for a gritty 25 and only Danny Kniveton with a lively 27 and Jack Rowlands (11) troubled the scorers. The wickets were shared out amongst the bowlers with Greg Hawke claiming 2 for 32.
A hand injury to skipper Jon Norrington prevented him opening the St John's innings, but Grant Atchison and Nick Hawke took command. With excellent batting, they featured in an unbroken stand of 123 to pick up another four points for the Saints. Grant finished with 55 and Nick ended on 54.
Cronkbourne notched up a fine victory against Ramsey. The Northerners looked to have lost the match when they could muster only 138. Ollie Webster cracked an unbeaten 46 and Brian Arnold made 27.
The Tromode bowling was led by Max Stokoe who finished with the fine figures of 4 for 11 from eight accurate overs. There were also two wickets each for Graeme Garrett and Connor Byrne.
The Ramsey attack tore into the Douglas side and at 76 for 5 the game was in the balance. Garrett was then joined by Matt Morphet and together they took their side to victory with a stand of 66. Graeme made 33 and Matt 27.
Chris McConnell with 2 for 29 was the best of the Ramsey bowlers. This was an impressive win for Cronkbourne and establishes them as genuine title contenders.
Last year's champions Castletown came bouncing back after last week's defeat to overcome Valkyres. Mark Williams starred for the Town against his old club. First he took 3 wickets for 30 and then hit 44.
Valkyres had reached 165 for 7 with skipper Keith Brew crashing 54, Brian Quirk 27 and Matt Wozniak 27. In reply the Castletown batting, which had been wayward last Saturday, turned in a disciplined performance.
Opener Andy Cross led from the front with a sparkling 81 not out. The only wicket to fall was that of Mark Williams, trapped by Keith Brew. This was a nine wicket win and big confidence booster for the Castletown club.
