Mavericks destroy Optimists

David Piesing

Marlborough Trust Optimists, winners of the 2006 Carey Olsen Championship, knew that it would be tough to defend their title in 2007 but even they will surely have been shell-shocked by the manner of a 5-wicket thrashing by Mavericks in their opening game at KGV.

Optimists posted a decent score of 235 for 5 in their 45 overs on the same track used yesterday for the Cobo v Wanderers fixture. Skipper Andy Biggins top-scored with 86 and former captain Mark Jefferies weighed in with an unbeaten 69 in a partnership of 180. However, as they proved last season by winning some remarkable run chases, the aggressive and positive style of Mavericks ensures that they fear no total. They are likely to come unstuck from time to time but that was not the case today. Dale Webb, an evening league second division player making his debut for Mavericks and also his debut in the Championship, took Optimists apart with a devastating 76 off just 43 balls. With skipper and last year's GCA Player of the Year Justin Meades making an unbeaten 75, Mavericks cruised home in just 29 overs to complete an amazing victory.
