Cronkbourne go top as Saints and Town falter
IOMCA
There were plenty of shocks and surprises in Saturday's games in the Standard Bank League.
Cronkbourne shot to the top of the table with an impressive win over Valkyres. Batting first, the Tromode team were given a great start by openers Max Stokoe (66) and Steve Slack (55).
They put on 103 for the first wicket and the good work was carried on by Graeme Garrett with an unbeaten 32. The side finished on a healthy 203 for 4. Keith Brew took 2 for 44 and Brian Quirk had 1 for 26 from nine tight overs.
Max Stokoe then removed both of the Valkyres' openers for ducks and the southerners began to struggle. New signing Will Wood came to the rescue with a brave 64, but the team were dismissed for 150.
Stokoe finished with 3 for 27, Neil Holmes took 2 -25 and Luke Lacey 2 -33. Cronkbourne won by 53 runs to maintain their one hundred per cent record.
Ramsey pulled off a dramatic victory at Mullen-e-Cloie. After losing the toss, they bowled out St Johns for 132 with Chris McConnell and Ollie Webster each taking four wickets. Nick Hawke impressed for the Saints with a skilful 31 and Peter Lewis made 18.
The Saints then struck back with outstanding bowling but a cavalier 46 from Ken Harding swung the game for the northerners. However when he departed for 46 to Scott Pearce, ten more runs were needed with only three wickets left.
In a tense finish Chris McConnell won the game by smashing a six. It only just cleared the line and was very nearly caught by Jim Murphy sprinting round the boundary.
Simon Watson was the hero for Crosby with a splendid century. He made 108 not out from a total of 176 for 5 against Castletown. Good backing came from Ollie Swales (18) and Jamie Johnstone (16).
A tireless Andy Sewell returned 2 for 21 from nine overs - four of which were maidens. Garreth Roome also took two wickets.
In reply the Town were soon in trouble and were kept afloat by a sterling 49 from opener Mark Williams. Greg Tomlinson cracked 23 and John Short 18, but the southerners' innings ended on 144 - just 32 runs short.
The Crosby bowling was excellent with Andrew Turner on top form taking 4 for 40. Jacob Hicklin also claimed two wickets as Crosby picked up their first points of the season. Their fielding was excellent with nine of the dismissals being catches.
On Wednesday and Thursday there are five ties in the first round of the Isle Of Man Bank sponsored Blincoe Cup. Ironically expect the holders, Crosby, to go out when they visit Jurby to play the Grasshoppers.
Crosby won the trophy with their B side last year, but such was their all round success, the team was also promoted to the MAC Financial Cain League This means they cannot take part in the Blincoe. So their C eleven will take their place and are unlikely to match for Matt Greenbank's side.
The rest of the games look evenly poised, but the tie of the round should be Ronaldsway A against Ramsey B. Ronaldsway have won the Blincoe four times and Ramsey were last year's losing finalists. This could be very close.
