Comprehensive wins for Elizabeth College and Mavericks
David Piesing
SATURDAY
The second Saturday of the Championship season resulted in a hollow 9-wicket thrashing of Air Search Rovers by Mavericks and a very impressive 53-run victory by Elizabeth College over PKF Wanderers.
At Port Soif, a woefully weak Rovers side missing several first-team regulars were annihilated by Mavericks after both teams had won their opening fixtures last weekend. Rovers batted first and were skittled for 84 in 31 overs. Only Ryan Bishop with 43 made a significant score as skipper Justin Meades (5 for 19) and off-spinner GH Smit (4 for 21) ran through the inexperienced Rovers line-up. In reply, Mavericks knocked off the runs in exactly 8 overs as Smit smashed a remarkable unbeaten 69 off just 24 balls with six 6s and seven 4s, including 28 off an Aaron Scoones over to finish the match. This followed Smit's unbeaten 94 from 54 balls at the same ground in the Evening League earlier in the week. Mavericks took a maximum 40 points while Rovers undid most of their fine work against the College last week to pick up a miserable 4 bonus points.
Over at KGV, Elizabeth College won the toss and elected to bat but were in the mire at 36 for 4 after some superb early bowling and fielding by PKF Wanderers. College did not help their cause with two suicidal run-outs
but they were bailed out by a fantastic partnership by Jonny Clark (aged 16) and Will Thompson (aged 15). The two batted with immense maturity to firstly resteady the ship and then to accelerate. Clark eventually fell for a fine 60 off 64 balls, while Thompson made 65 from 89 balls. However, Clark's dismissal merely brought in 15-year old Tom Kirk who smashed an amazing unbeaten 52 from just 24 balls. Wanderers would have been expecting to chase around 190-200 with 5 overs remaining, but Kirk's onslaught took College to a very useful 224 for 6 in their 45 overs.
In reply, Wanderers were rocked by the loss of three early wickets to paceman Peter Le Hegarat before skipper Richard Veillard (53) and Matt Thornton (37) took them to 100 for 3. After Thornton was dismissed Wanderers' hopes lay with a big partnership between Veillard and Pierre Moody but Veillard was bowled trying to pull a short ball from Kirk just after reaching his 50. Moody made 25 but the target was beyond the rest of the Wanderers line-up as Jack Byrne mopped up the tail with his gentle seamers to take 5 for 15, while Le Hegarat finished with 3 for 24. Kirk also completed a fine all-round day with two wickets in his nine overs of off-spin. College took a maximum 40 points while Wanderers earned 13 points.
In Division Two, the College 2nd XI completed a great day for the College with an emphatic 9-wicket win over Marlborough Trust Optimists at College Field. Optimists made 156 all out with a half-century from Ian Damarell being the main contribution, but after losing Ben Boss to the first ball of their innings, College cruised home with 80 not out from Rob Byrne (completing rather a good day for the Byrne twins) while Ben McVey made an unbeaten 60.
SUNDAY
All of Sunday's games, including the Total Cobo v Marlborough Trust Optimists clash in the Championship at KGV, were called off due to torrential early morning rain which left lakes on the squares with a forecast of more heavy rain to come.
