Wins for Cobo and Mavericks in Week 3

David Piesing

SATURDAY

Total Cobo made it two wins out of two with a thumping 129-run win over Air Search Rovers at KGV on Saturday.

Cobo amassed an impressive 276 for 8 in their 45 overs with opener Matt Oliver making 102, supported by Ben Ferbrache (47) and skipper Stuart Le Prevost (46). Once again, Rovers were missing several key players and were forced to field several juniors. With a full side they may have pushed Cobo but with such a depleted side they were also going to be up against it. Rovers' chances of victory rested almost entirely with South Africa star batsman Ryan Bishop, who got to 38 on this occasion before he fell to young James Mullen's first delivery. Skipper Stuart Bisson and John Baker both got into the 20s for Rovers but the result was a foregone conclusion after Bishop's dismissal. Off-spinner Gary Rich took three for 21 for Cobo as Rovers were dismissed for 147.

In Division 2 Elizabeth College 2nd XI recorded their second win in three outings with a 74-run win over Mavericks 2 at Memorial Field. Batting first, College made 203 for 6 in their 40 overs with runs from Adam Robin (45 not out) and Carl Pugh (37). Mavericks were all out for 129 in reply, with Dale Webb top-scoring with 34. Jake Le Marchant took 3 for 36 for the College.

SUNDAY

Mavericks made it three wins out of three with a 3-wicket victory over PKF Wanderers but came very close to throwing it away with a late collapse.

Wanderers got off to a good start following a fine 57 from opener Ross Kneller but he holed out at long-off straight after the drinks break and the innings lost momentum as stand-in skipper Justin Walker snared three wickets with his occasional off-spin to back up the work of fellow off-spinner GH Smit who took one for 30 in his 9-over spell. It was left to 7th wicket pair Dave Piesing (33) and Andy Boyce (23 not out) to get Wanderers up to full batting points with 225 after a stand of 56 in the last 6 overs.

Wanderers struck early to remove Dale Webb but fellow opener, veteran former island skipper Paul Wakeford, survived a dropped catch behind when in single figures and made Wanderers pay in a partnership of 173 with Smit who is in remarkable form at the moment. Helped by some very wayward bowling as Wanderers conceded 23 wides, the pair took the score to 180 before Smit was bowled by Piesing's leg-spin for 73. Smit had earlier smashed a full toss from Steve Birkett onto the top of the pavilion roof for one of the biggest sixes seen at the ground. Piesing then trapped Wakeford lbw sweeping for 83 and suddenly the panic set in as the spin trio of Piesing, Challenger and Birkett started to make inroads. Jakob Pieterse struck several boundaries in a vital 25 before getting out and Mavericks finally crept over the line with 7 wickets down and just over 4 overs remaining. Wanderers rued their dropped catches, excessive wides and failure to score the 250 that they should have made, while Mavericks very nearly paid for some careless batting in the last 10 overs of their innings.

At Port Soif Total Cobo's Reserves got their Division 2 campaign off to a good start with a 61-run win over Marlborough Trust Optimists' 2nd XI. Batting first, Cobo made 194 for 9 in their 40 overs with opener Paul Le Tocq making a fine 78. Mike de Haaff took five for 30 for Optimists. In reply, opener Ian Damarell made 40 but apart from extras with 43, de Haaff batting at number 11 was the next highest scorer with 17. Young pace bowler James Mullen impressed for Cobo with 4 for 32 from his allotted 10 overs.
