Saints end Cronkbourne's unbeaten run in dramatic finish at Tromode

St Johns defeated Cronkbourne by just 3 runs in a thrilling match in the Standard Bank League on Saturday.
Batting first the Saints made a solid 152 for 8 with Australian Dave Cameron hitting 42 on his debut for the club. Greg Hawke scored 31 while Alex Stokoe and Graeme Garrett both took two wickets.
In reply the Cronkbourne top order collapsed and the game seemed over as they slumped to 22 for 4. Then Steve Clague and Graeme Garrett shared a tremendous stand. Facing fierce bowling, they dug in and rebuilt the innings.
Steve was eventually dismissed for 30 and Matt Morphet joined Garrett. Excellent shot selection saw them move towards their target and with five overs left they were only 27 runs from victory.
Matt was then bowled by Greg Hawke for 30 and Graeme was dismissed for a stunning 60. The tail enders hit out, but in a dramatic finish ended just three runs short. Scott Pearce was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 13 from nine tight overs.
This was a great win for the Saints and they now join Cronkbourne at the top of the table. Both sides are to be congratulated on a splendid hard-fought match.
Crosby notched up a fine ten wicket win against Valkyres. The southerners were bowled out for 141 with skipper Keith Brew hitting 33. Dave Picken took 3 for 17 and Ollie Swales had 3 for 39. Then Crosby openers Simon Watson and Danny Kniveton knocked off the runs without loss – Simon cracked 58 and Danny 85.
Castletown returned to winning ways at Ramsey. They scored a massive 264 for 6 with Wicus Wessels hitting 70, Andy Cross 51 and Mark Williams 47. The Ramsey batsmen started well, but when the first wicket went down on 34, major problems followed. Top class bowling saw Mark Williams take 4 for 12 and there were three wickets each for Gareth Roome and Andy Sewell Ramsey finished on 67 all out to give the Town a fine victory by 197 runs.

On Sunday Castletown lost their Lancashire Cup tie by 5 wickets against a strong Shaw CC eleven from Oldham.
The Town batted first and against some very tight bowling were dismissed for 99. D Taljard caused most of the problems with 4 wickets for 18 runs and R Harrington returned 2 for 18. Gareth Morris was going well when he was out for 24 and Mark Williams made a solid 19.
Castletown’s bowlers quickly hit back and Shaw looked in trouble at 49 for 5. They were rescued again by D Taljard who scored an unbeaten 35. Pick of the southern bowlers were Garreth Roome with 3 for 28 and Andy Sewell who returned 2 for 37.
