Castletown back in contention after hammering St John's

Cricket

Cronkbourne are now clear leaders of the Standard Bank League, but just behind them are St Johns, Ramsey and Castletown.

In Saturday’s games the Douglas club had a comfortable win at Crosby. Batting first, the home side made a good start and were in the driving seat at 81 for 1.

Then they quickly lost opener Simon Watson for 22 and Danny Kniveton for a brisk 42. The rest of the side then collapsed against fine bowling from Neil Holmes and Steve Cope.

The last nine wickets went down for only thirty runs with Holmes finishing with 2 for 20 and Cope taking 3 for 28. Max Stokoe, Luke Lacey and Alex Stokoe also had success.

The Cronkbourne batsmen looked confident and lost only two wickets getting the runs. After openers Pete Richards (22) and Max Stokoe (17) departed, Steve Clague hit an undefeated 31 and Steve Slack was 24 not out at the end.

St Johns hopes of going top with the Tromode side were shattered by a spirited display by Castletown. The southerners made 220 from their forty five overs, thanks to an impressive 66 from Wicus Wessels and 33 by Gareth Morris. Christian Steriopulos hit 21 and Duncan Miller made 24.

The Saints were then put on the rack by a fine spell from paceman Andy Sewell. In nine accurate overs he claimed five wickets for 32. At the other end Garreth Roome pitched in with 2 for 23.

Jim Murphy (20) and Nick Hawke (14) tried to turn the tide, but a buoyant Town performance led to a convincing win by 134 runs. The two sides meet again in two weeks time and the Mullen-e-Cloie club will be hoping Jon Norrington and Grant Atchinson will return to boost their batting.

The bowlers had a hard time at Ramsey with only nine wickets falling all afternoon. After Valkyres posted a creditable 181 for 6, the northerners replied with 183 for 3.

For the south team skipper Keith Brew cracked 39 and Brian Quirk was 44 not out as the innings closed. Brian then had a fine spell with the ball taking the three Ramsey wickets to fall. Eddie Cleator hit 75 which included 11 fours and one six, while Marc Pons-Burt struck 42 not out.

Ken Harding ended on 39 not out to enable his team to collect all four points.

 Crosby U15s open their account

After winning the toss at an overcast Crosby Memorial ground, Crosby elected to bowl. Jack Rowlands and Alex Wilson opened the bowling for Crosby, with Castletown openers Daniel Hawke and Nick Henwood negotiating the early exchanges. The score reached 27 before the first wicket went down, when the economical Alex Wilson (5-0-13-1) dismissed Dan Hawke for 4.

The wicket of Castletown skipper Alex Sharpe followed soon afterwards when a mix up led to him being run out. James Lacey then joined Henwood at the wicket, and hit a steading 13 before being bowled by young Michael Coleman. Meanwhile Jacob Hicklin (5-0-11-0) was holding down one end with some tight bowling.

With the score being 57 for 3 off 16 overs, the next partnership would be vital. Guy Wood, on Castletown debut, was the next man in, and with Henwood well set they lauched into the bowling. Henwood was dismissed for a well played 38, again the "they miss you hit" mantra paying dividends for Coleman.

However the Wood/Henwood partnership had yielded 47 runs and taken the Southerners over the 100 mark. Wood (42 not out)displayed some strong hitting and the straight 6 off Coleman (2-50) was brutal! Wood built a decent partnership with Ruari Mooney who, on debut, hit 14 to take the total to a very respectable 144-7 off their 25 overs. There were 2 run outs in the last over to take the Castletown wickets tally to 7.

Wides had been a Crosby nemesis, and when the Marown side started their reply it became the bain of Town's life too. As a result Crosby begin to accumulate runs whilst their opening partnership of Rowlands and Johnston played themselves in whilst hitting the bad ball. The trio of Rowlands, Hicklin and Johnston have become regulars in Crosby's Standard Bank League team, and that experience was vital as they chased down Town's 144. Danny Hawke's bowling was lively, and was unlucky not to pick up some wickets.

Rowlands and Johnston put on 50 before Rowlands was caught by Mooney off another Town A team debutant, Sid Mohan for 26. The introduction of Sharpe, Miller and Salmon to the bowling attack falied to get the wicket that was required, and with Johnston playing the anchor role at one end, Hicklin played his shots at the other. Town fought hard but in the end Hicklin steered the ship home with a strong 52 not out, with Jamie not out 32 at the other end - a fine run chase completed with over 4 overs to spare.

Castletown 144-7 - Guy Wood 42 not out, Nick Henwood 38, Michael Coleman 2-50

Crosby 146-1 - Jacob Hicklin 52 not out, Jamie Johnston 32 not out, Jack Rowlands 26

Crosby win by 9 wickets
