123-run win for home side against the Dutch

David Piesing

An outstanding all-round performance by the Guernsey Cricket Board XI in the opening match of their 3-match series with the Flamingo Dutch A side resulted in a 124-run victory at the KGV.

In glorious weather, the visitors won the toss and elected to field first. They were rewarded with a very early strike as opener Jeremy Frith was bowled by Bukhari for 0 in the first over. Fellow opener Matt Oliver survived a confident appeal for a catch behind and put on a superb century partnership with Ami Banerjee before being caught behind for 71. Banerjee was joined by GH Smit who made 37 and despite the quick loss of skipper Stuart Le Prevost, Banerjee went on to make a fine unbeaten 107 as the home side totalled 259 for 4 in their 50 overs. Bukhari was the most successful Dutch bowler with two for 44 in his 10 overs.

In reply, the Dutch side faced accurate bowling from the young home seam attack of Blane Queripel (aged 20), Peter Le Hegarat (18) and Kris Moherndl (18) and the opening pair of de Grooth and Van Ierschot took the score to 48 before Banerjee continued his excellent day by making the initial breakthrough. He struck again shortly afterwards, as did Moherndl, to leave the Dutch reeling at 62 for 3. The introduction of the experienced spin pair of Frith and off-spinner Gary Rich, with the visitors then needing 7 an over, saw a steady flow of wickets as the Dutch side tried to force the pace, ending 135 all out in the 45th over. Rich was rewarded with the impressive figures of four for 28 from his 10 overs, while Frith took two for 31 in his 10 overs as the pair closed off both ends. Seelaar was the top scorer for the Dutch with 22, while van Ierschot (20) and de Grooth (19) were the only other players top make double figures. Banerjee ended with two for 8 from 6 overs while Moherndl (one for 22 off 7 overs), Queripel (one for 25 off 7 overs) and Le Hegarat (none for 12 off 5 overs) will all be very satisfied with the day's work.

This was a very impressive performance from the home side in all departments. The Dutch side will be happier with their bowling than with their batting, but will look to bounce back in the remaining 2 games in the series.
