Result of 2-day match versus Belgium.
France Cricket
Match 1: France 90; Belgium 92-5
Belgium beat France in a match delayed and shortened due to rain that fell the day before and on the morning if the match. The grass wicket was very soft during the morning, so for the safety of players the start was delayed until 1.15 p.m. France lost the toss and were put in to bat; the weather having created a favourable conditions for the bowlers. From the outset our batsmen had problems, as the bounce was uncertain and slow. It should be noted that the French team had only four regular first team players and included seven playing for the first time, of which four were 'possibles'. The fielding and bowling of the French team was pretty good; it was the batting that let them down but the squad nevertheless showed promise.
Match 2: Match abandoned due to rain.
With continuous rain the umpires and coaches of the two teams agreed to abandon the match. In its place the management of the French team decided to organise a historic and cultural outing that took the players to the Chateau de Saumur and the buildings in the old part of the town. They also visited the 2.5 km long subterranean Cave de Grenelle and saw how still and sparkling wine was made; the players being fascinated by the fermentation process. We were impressed by the fact that in the past in order to prevent sedimentation in the wine a worker would turn by hand up to 50,000 bottles per day; What potential for a spinner! To end this rainy day the teams took their lunch in the shelter of the marquees set up for an international football tournament in Saumur.
France Cricket thanks most sincerely the Saumur Cricket Club for all their efforts and organisation for this week-end's activities.
The next outing for the French team is against the Crusaders on 27th June, also at Saumur.
