Cobo go clear at the top
David Piesing
Total Cobo went clear at the top of the GCA Championship with a thumping 105-win over Mavericks at KGV on Sunday. Both teams went into the game unbeaten but Mavericks hopes were dashed when they were skittled for just 98 in reply to Cobo's 203 for 8. Island skipper Stuart Le Prevost hit 58 for Cobo while Jeremy Frith hit 51 and Kris Moherndl made 42 not out. In their reply, GH Smit made 42 for Mavericks but the damage was doen by veterans Gary Rich (4 for 13) and Mark Renouf (4 for 18).
On Saturday Marlborough Trust Optimists squeezed home by 2 wickets off the last ball against the College at College Field. College made 197 for 9 with Richard Angliss making 39 and Tom Kirk hitting a brisk 58. Steve Queripel took 3 for 30 for Optimists. It looked game over when openers Tim De Putron (62) and Mark Clapham (38) put on a century stand for the first wicket but a collapse saw Optimists needing 5 off the last over and 2 off the last ball which Andy Biggins sliced over cover to clinch the points. Jack Byrne took 3 for 37 for the College.
Also on Saturday Air Search Rovers edged out PKF Wanderers by 20 runs at Port Soif. Rovers were again missing several key players and managed 168 for 6 in their 45 overs on a slow wicket. Ryan Bishop (54) and Jody Bisson (39) laid the foundations with an opening stand but four quick wickets brought Wanderers back into the game. John Baker (25 not out) and Matt Hallett (18 not out) put together a vital 7th wicket stand which proved crucial. Wanderers never really got going in a poor batting display and lost far too many soft wickets. Only Richard Veillard (24) and Pierre Moody (21) got past 20 although extras top-scored with 37 as Wanderers were bowled out for 148. Stuart Bisson took 3 for 17 and Aaron Scoones conceded just 17 runs off his allotted 9 overs.
In Division 2 Pure St. Sampsons lead the table with maximum points after beating Sylvans at Memorial Field by 7 wickets after being set 148 to win. Former island bowler Mark Culverwell took 5 wickets for the Saints while openers Mark Griffiths (38) and former island keeper Justin Ferbrache (34) set them on their way to victory with an opening partnership.
Elizabeth College 2nd XI beat Total Cobo Reserves by 25 runs at Memorial Field. The students scored 173 for 8 in their 40 overs with Rob Byrne making 42 and Tom Case hitting 40. Paul Le Tocq took 5 for 35. Le Tocq continued his good day with a half-century when Cobo batted, but James Ferbrache wrapped up victory for the College with 6 for 15.
PKF Wanderers 2 got off the mark with an 11-run win over previously in-form Salemites at Port Soif. Batting first Wanderers made 130 all out, with Ben Driver top-scoring with 40 but Salemites came unstuck against John Vaudin who took 5 wickets before Salemites were bowled out in the last over.
