GCC Bwin claim Calpe’s scalp.
With the withdrawal of Gib RFU from the Wiggins/Benrimoj Shield competition, the only week-end fixture was between GCC Bwin and Calpe CC played on Saturday at the Europa Oval. This turned out to be a close contest with Calpe CC looking the more likely winners at the half-way stage until their long tail was exposed in the latter stages.
Shaky start by GCC Bwin and fine one by Calpe CC.
GCC Bwin batted first and made a shaky start, losing three wickets with just 49 runs on the board, their mainstay at this stage being Kieron Ferrary, and after fifteen overs their total stood at 83/3. When Calpe’s turn to bat came, Chris Phillips and Scott Chipolina defied all efforts to dislodge them as they moved on to 88/0 at their fifteen overs stage, at which point they looked the more likely winners of the contest.
Change of fortunes in the second half.
GCC Bwin then returned to the crease and immediately lost the wicket of Christian Rocca. When Rudi Phillips holed out soon afterwards, the innings threatened to collapse, but in Sebastian Suarez, Ferrary at last found a worthy partner and these two put on 57 invaluable runs for the sixth wicket before Ferrary’s long vigil at the crease came to an end, stumped off the bowling of Robbie Skinner for 87. Suarez went on to make 33 in a final total of 216/7. For Calpe CC., Chris Phillips took 3/38 and there were two wickets apiece for Mark Bacarese and Skinner.
Calpe lost the wicket of Chris Phillips (60) in the first over of their second spell at the crease and when Scott Chipolina (37) and Mark Bacarese departed in quick succession the long Calpe tail was exposed and the side was eventually dismissed for 190 in the 30th. over. Charlie Harrison (3/36) and Ian Farrell (3/38) were GCC Bwin’s most successful bowlers. GCC Bwin took 18 points from the game to Calpe’s 5.
Next Week.
The Victoria Stadium comes into use for the first time this season on Saturday as GCC Bwin face Mediterranean CC in another Wiggins/Benrimoj Shield match. When these two sides met earlier in the season the match ended in a tie so an interesting contest is in prospect.
