Town and Cronkbourne in big clash this weekend

M Trace

Cronkbourne and Castletown, the top teams in the Standard Bank League, clash at Tromode tomorrow.

In the opening match of the season Cronkbourne shocked Castletown, the 2006 champions. The Douglas side, who had been in bottom place last year, romped to a shock 138 run victory.

Since then Phil Richardson’s team have played very well, losing only one game. However on Saturday they suffered a setback when their match at Ramsey was rained off.

Castletown, playing in the sunny south of the Island, took full advantage. They defeated Valkyres and so narrowed the gap at the top of the table to just two points.

Now the sides meet in one of the most important clashes of the season. Both teams are expected to be at full strength and could encounter selection problems. Returning students from University might cause both skippers to think long and hard about their line-ups.

For both clubs this is a “must win” encounter. An exciting battle is in prospect.

Ramsey, lurking just behind the Town in third place, will be looking to nab all four points at Crosby. The Marown team have suffered through injuries, but signs are the situation is improving.

On the other hand the northern batsmen are in tremendous form and the Crosby bowlers will come under heavy attack. Just how well they react will decide the fate of this game.

Keith Brew’s Valkyres must be wondering when their first points will arrive. Some good performances have not yielded any rewards and their game against St Johns will pose big problems.

Will Wood turned in a fine batting display last week against Castletown and Brew himself is in fine form. It cannot be long now before they turn the corner.

But don’t expect the Saints to show any mercy! They need all four points to keep in touch with the leaders. If they go in first, then watch out for a big score.

The draw for the Tinker Cup has been made. Holders St Johns travel away to meet Castletown who have beaten them twice this season in the Standard Bank League.

In the north, Ramsey are at home to Crosby. The games, which are sponsored by Collins Stewart, go ahead on Sunday 1st July.

Cronkbourne had a good win over Castletown B in the Lloyds TSB League. The Town won the toss and elected to bowl first. However this did not scare the Douglas batsmen who hit 166 for 2 in 25 overs.

Alex Stokoe and Richard Foden both scored fifty in what proved to be a match winning century stand for the first wicket. Carl Wagstaffe then added a quick fire 14 which left Castletown with a massive chase.

Despite a valiant effort, the southerners only managed to score 70. Dan Hattersly top scored with 15.

Cronkbourne excelled with some athletic fielding and tight bowling. Ryan Burns, Alex Bowers, Ben Crookall and Michael Williams all picked up two wickets each.

So another win for the Tromode team, but they know that shortly a much tougher test will come from Castletown A.
