GCC favourites to retain Wiggins/Benrimoj Shield

GCC BWIN ALMOST ASSURED OF WIGGINS/BENRIMOJ TITLE AFTER COMPREHENSIVE WIN OVER CALPE CC.
Kieron Ferrary hits maiden century.
GCC Bwin were indebted to a fine unbeaten century from their young wicket keeper/batsman, Kieron Ferrary, for a massive 119 runs win over Calpe CC at Europa on Saturday.
GCC Bwin well ahead after the first half.
Calpe CC won the toss and put their opponents in, Ian Farrell and Kieron Ferrary giving GCC Bwin an excellent start with a partnership of 70 runs in the opening ten overs. When Farrell finally perished, caught off the bowling of Kabir Mirpuri, Christian Rocca kept Ferrary company up to the fifteen overs half-way stage when the total had progressed to 107/1 with Ferrary four short of his half century.
Calpe CC were also given a good start by Mark Bacarese and Mirpuri who put on 61 runs, although their scoring rate was much lower than GCC Bwin’s. Sebastian Suarez then struck an important blow for his side getting Mirpuri out stumped, thanks to a fine piece of wicket-keeping from Ferrary. Three overs later, Calpe suffered another mortal blow when Charlie Harrison had Bacarese caught, and at the fifteen overs stage the total stood on 74/2.
GCC Bwin press home their advantage.
When GCC Bwin resumed their innings, they lost the wicket of Rocca with the total on 124, but that was to be Calpe CC’s last taste of success as Ferrary and Steve Gonzalez took complete command, striking 116 runs in the remaining overs to bring the total to an impressive 240/2. Ferrary ended on 119 not out, his maiden century, and Gonzalez on 45 not out. It is as well to draw a veil over Calpe CC’s bowling figures!
The game was as good as over as a contest when Calpe CC lost the wickets of Karan Aswani, Scott Chipolina and John Hazell with only 103 runs on the board, thus exposing the long Calpe tail, the side being bundled out for a paltry 121 in 23.4 overs. For GCC Bwin, Harrison was the star bowler, returning figures of 4/25. Young Alastair Napoli enjoyed a good afternoon taking two catches and claiming two wickets off two balls, and not so young Keith Campbell took 2/9.
Next week.
With the Wiggins/ Benrimoj Shield now almost done and dusted, interest focuses next week-end on the start of the Senior League, being played this season on a forty overs per side basis. At the Victoria Stadium, Calpe CC take on Mediterranean CC, whilst at Europa GCC Bwin take on Combined Colleges.
