Cobo clinch GCA Championship without playing !
David Piesing
Total Cobo clinched the 2007 Carey Olsen GCA Championship for the first time in 9 years without breaking sweat on Saturday when their clash with Marlborough Trust Optimists was washed out without a ball being bowled. The unseasonal torrential rain meant an easy decision for the umpires and two captains with no prospect whatsoever of any play. Under the Average Points system (points scored divided by games completed) Cobo cannot now be caught by their nearest rivals, Mavericks even though the latter have two games remaining.
At the other end of the table Air Search Rovers secured their place in the CI Club Championship with a 9-wicket win over PKF Wanderers on Sunday at Port Soif. Heavy overnight rain and a morning shower had also threatened this game but an adjoining strip dried out sufficiently by 3pm to enable a 22-over game to commence at 3pm. Rovers won the toss and elected to bowl on a helpful wicket. Some outstanding bowling by Tim Duke in particular (3 for 8 from his allotted 5 overs) restricted Wanderers to 113 for 9 with only openers Matt Thornton (28) and James Warr (25) getting to grips with the pitch. Wanderers knews that they would have to remove South African run machine Ryan Bishop if they were to win and he narrowly survived a tough chance to James Warr at backward point off Pierre Moody in the very first over. He also gave two chances later on but by then he and Duke had put together a solid partnership and Rovers cruised home by 9 wickets with 11 balls to spare, Bishop finishing unbeaten on 55.
The result leaves Wanderers still fighting it out with Optimists for the fourth spot in the CI Club Championship. Optimists can secure their place by beating Mavericks next Saturday, but if they lose (or get washed out) then it will come down to an effective play-off two weeks later when Optimists play Wanderers in the last league game.
Rain has played a big part in this year's Championship with more games lost to the weather than ever before, but despite the rain the outstanding team has won the title and the weakest two sides are fighting it out for last place and so the rain has not unduly affected the league outcome.
