St John's win thriller as Cronkbourne's lead is cut to 2 points

St Johns won one of the best games of the season in the Standard Bank League when they beat Cronkbourne after a cliff-hanger finish.

The Saint’s batting hero was Greg Hawke who hit a superb century. He came to the crease with his side in big trouble at 27 for 3.

Greg joined Scott Pearce and the pair put on a stand of 124. Scott cracked a disciplined 44 while Greg was finally dismissed on exactly one hundred. His innings had included 7 fours and no fewer than 4 sixes.

St Johns were dismissed for 195 with Max Stokoe taking 4 for 20 from his nine overs. Connor Byrne returned 3 for 59 and there was a very good spell from young left arm spinner Luke Lacey.

Cronkbourne’s reply was delayed by heavy rain and they eventually set out needing a revised target to win of 168 in 38 overs. Another delay caused by the weather saw a new target of 153 off 35 overs.

Led by an impressive 40 from opener Pete Richards, the Douglas side were soon in the driving seat. With four overs left they needed just 18 runs for victory.

Then Chris Hawke struck and wickets tumbled. Five wickets went down in three overs and the last pair of Phil Richardson and Alex Stokoe were left to get 12 to win the game.

After some singles, Phil belted a boundary and off the last over four runs were required. However Scott Pearce took a wicket with the first ball and the Saints had achieved a memorable success.

There was another nail-biting climax in the south of the island when Castletown just got home against Ramsey by 3 wickets. The northerners were dismissed for 148 with opener Eddie Cleator making 44 and Marc Pons-Burt 31.

The Town were facing defeat at 90 for 6, but 26 from Jamie Tomlinson and an undefeated knock of 24 from Garreth Roome saw the southerners gain all four points..

Just when will Valkyres luck turn? They cracked a solid 173 against Crosby with Will Wood hitting an impressive 93.

They knew they must get Marown opener Simon Watson out quickly and early on the ball hit his wicket. However the bail was not dislodged, so Simon carried on to make 81 and Crosby went through to a seven wicket win.

During the week there was a great match at Tromode when the Presidents Eleven played the touring Merseyside Commonwealth.  The home team ran up 188 for 6 with Christian Steriopulos hitting a classic 60 and Jeff Levin a polished 57.

Then Merseyside got going, led by Andy Lee who is the professional at Birkenhead Park. He amassed a splendid 110 and the visitors looked set for victory as the final over arrived.

The English needed just four runs to win and 15 year old Alex Stokoe was bowling. But Bang! Alex took two wickets, there was one run out and the Manx won by 3 runs.

A thrilling victory win and obviously Alex is “one to watch” for the future. The other week he took 5 wickets in the Standard Bank League.
