Castletown take over at top of Standard Bank League

M Trace

Castletown are now top of the Standard Bank League after beating Cronkbourne on Sunday.

The 2006 champs were in top form as they dismissed the Tromode side for just 61. Jamie Tomlinson led the charge with 4 for 17 and there was top class back up from Andy Sewell (3 -26) and Mark Williams (2 -0).

Cronkbourne got away to a poor start and only a late stand between Kane Dooley (10) and Neil Holmes (11) prevented a disaster. The Town also had problems by conceding no fewer than 28 extras.

Any thoughts of an easy victory for the southerners were dispelled by a fiery spell from Holmes who claimed two quick wickets. However Dave Griffiths (26) and Wicus Wessels (22) featured in an unbroken stand to gain a convincing eight wicket victory.

There was also a classic Tinker Cup semi final on Sunday when Ramsey met Crosby. The northerners scored a convincing 252 for 8 from their forty overs. Opener Eddie Cleator hit 74 and Ollie Webster blasted 84, which included 7 fours and 2 sixes.

Ramsey fans looking for a quick win found Simon Watson in brilliant form. The Crosby opener cracked a great century and ended on 117 not out.

Nick Wasley made 28 and Danny Kniveton 20, but the side ended just short of their target on 235 for 5. Ramsey now go through to the final where they will meet the winners of this Sunday’s other semi between Castletown and St Johns.

Castletown will be anxiously watch the weather this week-end.

They now top the Standard Bank League and are playing bottom of the table Valkyres on Saturday. Their supporters will consider the result a foregone conclusion and a full four points.

But if the game is cancelled, then the team will only pick up two points and a chance to consolidate that number one position will have gone. Valkyres though should not be written off. Their batsmen are producing the goods and there is potential in the bowling.

Second placed Cronkbourne have lost their last two games and now face a tricky home fixture against Ramsey. Rob Webber’s side are only four points behind the Douglas team and his batsmen are in form.

Cronkbourne will still be missing Steve Cope and Graeme Garrett, but there is a great deal of young talent in the side. They are learning fast and on their home track will be more than a handful.

St Johns are expected to keep up the pressure on the leaders when they tackle Crosby at Mullen-e-Cloie. Last Saturday’s stirring victory has boosted morale and the return of Ewald Killian will also increase their fire-power.

The Crosby bowling has suffered recently, but the batting has prospered. This could be a tight game.

In The Slips

*  Martyn Gawne passed away recently. A fine and enthusiastic player for Castletown, he will be greatly missed.

* Terry Crook recently took a hat-trick for Crosby against Ramsey in the Cain League. This is the third occasion the feat has been achieved this season – and each time it has been a Crosby player!

* There were four Hawkes in the St Johns team which played Cronkbourne in the Standard Bank League. Brothers Greg, Nick and Chris were joined by young Daniel who is the son of Chris.

* The next meeting of the Island Executive will be on Tuesday 17 July.
